Forums - Movies & TV - American Psycho, a movie that could have been great

Going to watch the movie again in the next 48h to refresh my memory.

Keeping my spot 'cause this thread is already among my favorites.

Hope other people do the same as the topic is well worth it.

Now that I have seen it again :

The bad

The scenario is sometimes so exagerated, so caricatural, that you can suddenly feel out of the movie (example - Patrick Bateman is never caught working - at all - his psychotic interjections are never challenged)

Very simple camera angles (think Robocop) when something more phobic or poetic would have been useful.

Some bad acting moments make the movie seem oh so kitsh. Even though the general exagerations in tone and the artificial tension in the dialogues are otherwise instrumental in decribing the whole 80's as fake.

Most caracters are not really interesting.

The good

Fascinating scenes and satyrical story/context.

The main caracter, and the way he interacts with some of his friends.

The ending (I actually liked it) where reality itself becomes increasingly disbelievable. Both the killings having really happened and being just in PB's head are plausible although you prefer to believe none and instead rely on the athmosphere. For example, the apartment might have been cleaned by the real estate people so that the value would not go down. Just as it might have never happened. You prefer not to focus on it and instead await the next indication eagerly.

Well I haven't seen this movie, but going from boxoffice mojo and imdb.
This movie was pretty good. 7.6 on imdb (wich is like amazingly high) and it made 5times it production budget.
But then again, I haven't watched it so I can't judge :p

I haven't seen it.

The book was much more gruesome and disturbing, especially a scene involving rats and cheese that would have been unfilmable/unwatchable.

But I think the movie makes for a great adaptation too. One of my favorites, with a great cast too. Read the book if you get a chance though!

The movie IS great. You're supposed to be left wondering what is real and what is not. Also just how much can the rich and powerful get away with acting badly.

Bale's performance makes the movie.

It already is a great movie and has one of my favourite scenes of all time. This movie has a lot of great scenes

Also i just loved it when he finally broke down. It was funny and enjoyable when he gunning down people left and right maybe im a psycho :O anyways i enjoyed it maybe because the whole movie felt realistic and that finally breakdown felt so out of place i can understand some people not liking that part.

In OP I showed how there was little wiggle-room in the interpretation of the narrative, the murders just didn't happen in almost all cases. If you go in imdb, the producer admits this flaw. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0144084/faq#.2.1.3

Do you disagree with the points I made? I'd like to know what you disagree on.

You are left with 2 possibilities: Either the murders were real or they were not. Either way it does not take away from the greatness and boldness of the film. I too feel the ending sucked but because it ended on such a flat note not because of the ambiguity. The film is called American Psycho so it is concerned with the psychology of its subject. We are given an inside glimpse inside his mind. At the end even he is unsure what to believe.

nothing in the movie was for real...the ending is also one of the most satisfying IMO.

great movie!

Keiner kann ihn bremsen, keiner macht ihm was vor. Immer der richtige Schuss, immer zur richtigen Zeit. Superfussball, Fairer Fussball. Er ist unser Torschützenkönig und Held.

If I remember correctly from the book (not to keep harping on about the book, because I understand that they are two different animals), the body count really piles up and the murders reach such a frenzy that your lefting questioning Bateman's sanity. Not so much whether he actually did them or not.

I don't think it takes away from the movie, because it's not stated explicitly anywhere that it was all in his imagination.
