Well, Mario 64 is my least favorite Mario game so...Super Mario Bros., Super Mario World or even recent Super Mario Bros. U are better examples of polished games on day one of a system.
I think most of our expectations are set by previous launches of that company. Sony's PS4 launch was par for previous launches to me of PlayStation (I'd go 2, 4, 1, 3 for my tastes).

Well, if you can prove that good games were the norm for launch games then you have a point.

My bad. When i first read it it looked like he liked the launch titles.
Kameo on 360 was good. Resistance on PS3 too. Project Gotham on XBOX mindblowned me.
And don't forget rayman on PSX

Some example of launch titles games that I played...
You can disagree but most of these games are better than the actual launch titles with few exceptions.
Edit - I think I forget some good launch titles in the list.
Can't say I disagree. To be honest, I've found this to be the case with the N64 and the GC. They both had some decent launch games.
Playstation = The Beast from the East
Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS
