Forums - Sales - Is Anyone Else Questioning MS's 2M Sold Through?

Well, just a few hours ago, we have gotten November's NPD.  MS has sold 909K Xbox Ones in Nov.  While this is 200K+ less than the PS4s numbers (according to famousmortimer), it is still a great start for the Xbox One.  However, this has got me thinking about MS announcing that they have sold 2M to customers 18 days after launch.  This is just 3 days longer than when Sony announced 2.1M to consumers after the PS4's launch.  The numbers we have now are making me think that maybe MS was overestimating sales.

Here's a few points:

EU & AU - Sony announced sales of 700K across EU and AU for the first 2 days, while MS announced only AU sales of 66K for the first three days.  While we don't have overall One numbers, we do have a few bits of info that point to it not selling as well as the PS4.  And there's the fact that EU is very much "Sonyland."

UK - Sony announced they have sold a record 250K in the first 2 days of the launch, while the Xbox One sold 150K in the same time period.

Spain - On Dec 10th, the same end date of MS's 2M, Sony announces that the PS4 has sold 80K in Spain to date.  They also say the ratio for the PS4 and Xbox One is 3.5:1, meaning that the One had sold just under 23K in the 18 days since its release.

Now, what I'm not understanding is how is MS selling fewer in several regions in the world, some by quite a bit, yet was able to pretty much catch up to the PS4 with only 3 extra days from its launch.  And I don't see them getting enough out to the US to make up for the deficit they must have in EU, seeing as they just recently (like the past few days) got more stock to retailers.  So, what do you guys think?  Did MS just count shipment numbers as sold, possibly including some they may have just shipped recently.  Or is there a region where the Xbox One is doing gangbusters?

2 million shipped then? It only sold a million in US and I doubt it sold a million in EU

I think they did it.

Maybe a bit overtracked but I wouldn't doubt if they did... X1 is a good system that people will like... Just doesn't make sense for everyone, including me, to pay $100 more for it... And many games that were supposed to be Sony exclusive is also going to X1 so its not the worst thing in the world

nobody knows how many have been sold not even NPD, even there data isnt 100% accurate

Yup, it does point to microsoft beeing up to their old tricks again.

Xb one reached 2 million on 9 December, after 18 days on sale in all markets. PS4 reached 2 million on 30 November after 16 days on sale in North America and 3 days on sale everywhere else.

Comparability-wise you could look at "market days" (my made up term) on sale: Xb one sold for 18 days in 13(?) markets = 234 market days. PS4 sold for 16 days in 2 markets and 3 days in 36 markets = 108+32 = 140 market days. So PS4 took 96 fewer market days to reach 2 million consoles sold.

Of course not all market days are equal so you'd have to introduce a market size coefficient to refine those numbers. But I think you'd still find that PS4 has sold significantly faster than Xb one.

Shipped is all I can think of, and that's probably if you include the shipments they just sent in the US before the announcement was given.  The first week (and even in that week, it will mostly be the first few days) is ALWAYS going to be the largest week around launch time, so its not like the One only did so-so in certain countries the first week, and then turned it around for the 2nd one.  So, it's definitely not doing as well in EU as the PS4.  My guess would be maybe ~500K at the time of that announcement for countries outside US.  Which means it would have to sell ~500K in the US in just the first ten days of Dec to meet that 2M.  I just don't see that happening.  Not even sure they would have the supply to pull that off.

So maybe xbox one got to the point when shipped isn't equal to sold so there's a decent amount of inventory left or there's a huge unknown territory for Microsoft.

900k in JUST the US after 9 days, whats so hard to believe about 2m worldwide in 18 days?
