Forums - Sales - WiiU sells ~220k, Mario 215k in November. 3DS 770k, Zelda 405k (NPD USA) - Nintendo

This is just freaking sad per NeoGaf:

Wii U, 42 days in 2012: ~885,000
Wii U, 336 days in 2013: ~730,000

It looks like WiiU needs to be rebranded and redesigned asap like Nintendo DS -> DS Lite.

You might say there is a problem when 3rd parties fail to sell on WiiU, but when even 1st party games fail to sell, its time for drastic measures.

Do any of you believe EA will come back in 2014? Do you think UbiSoft and Activision will drop support in 2014? It looks like the answer is no and yes.

So this means Nintendo 1st and 2nd parties will have to carry the entire system on its back in 2014. I really cant see that being even remotely possible.

So what can Nintendo do? What should it do? What options do they have?

I only have to think back to a few months ago, and the 220,000 Wii Us sold doesnt seem so bad :/

It's worse than any November the GameCube ever had, and less than half of the GameCube's total in its second November (2002). It's bad. These are Dreamcast level sales (literally).

yea.. a 15% increase with new hardware and a price of $99 is flying off shelves?

What part of "more than anything else" you didn't understand? by your definition nothing fly off the shelves this month (not counting the new hardware of course)

3DS sold the BEST! (If you ignore the consoles that sold better than it)

~800k is okay sales, but it's far below what Nintendo were expecting and is reflective of a serious decline in the handheld market.

Yeah as much as the Wii U sales hurt, I think the 3DS sales, while healthy on a relative metric, sting Nintendo badly.

It shows they're not getting much growth out of the handheld business despite throwing basically everything they could at the market this year and Iwata won't be able to play the "I turned around the 3DS business, give me time with Wii U" card to investors as much.

They are definitely missing their 3DS sales targets. Not getting 1 million in sales this November with everything Nintendo put into this holiday season for the 3DS is probably a bitter, bitter pill to swallow over the head offices in Japan.

In terms of 3DS, I think it has begun to reach its peak sales at this point, 2014 will probably see similar sales as 2013 and then a decline will begin. 100 million overall sales is still a very real possibility though because there will be another significant price cut at some point in either 2014 or 2015.

In terms of the Wii U, its really a glass half full or half empty thing. The Internet is glass empty 90 percent of the time, but there is still a few positives here. I keep seeing Gamecube number comparisons, but Gamecube never had to deal with 2 other consoles launching during November at the same time, to me, for the Wii U to somehow sell 220k amid all the Xbone/PS4 launch hype, especially when it was only selling 65k or so for months is about as much as Nintendo could have expected. What I will say is that 2014 will be the make or break year, no doubt. If the combination of DK/Kart/Smash/Bayonetta/Whatever else they are working in doesn't get sales up then the Wii U is going to be a failure. The good news is with nothing truly exclusive (Titanfall will be on 360) to the new consoles coming out for almost a year, the atmosphere will be in Nintendos favor to make a big comeback.

Oh don't get me wrong. I'm not saying this sales are amazing, but when compared to the rest it din't do half-bad at all, and like said "it fly off the shelf" more than other consoles. Of course new hardware will almost always get higher numbers, even the Wii U fly off the shelves last year (only lasted like 2 weeks though).

How is the 2DS a mistake?

Because, at least to me, its having a dual negative effect on what nintendo orginally designed it for.  Its cheapness is sacrificing margins for marketshare gain that is barely there.  They would have been better off lowering the price of the original 3DS.   Probably wont find out until their report but im sure they made more money last year than this year (Wii U bigger sales, no discontiuation of the 8GB, more sales of higher price 3DS and XL as opposed to the 2DS,3DS and XL mix)

Working with a lot of assumptions here. You have nothing to proof what you just said. Unless you know the internal financials of Nintendo, and know their financial reasons as to why they release the 2DS or even how much profit they are making out of the system.

No reason to mentioned the 2DS unless you had a solid proof.

Never presented anything I said as truth.  And making many assumpitions on many factual numbers is the norm.  Nintendo gives out numbers every 3 months and im just giving my take on why i think the 2DS is a mistake and in due time will find out the answer.  This site is nothing but revisionist history anyway, we'll find out in January.
