Im starting to agree with u on the sku without a gamepad but id say $229 instead of $199. That way they can likely get some profit off of it and make the gamepad sku look like a good value. Id say do some bundles like this

Wii U+Motion Plus+NSMBU+Luigi U-$229

Wii U+2 Pro Controllers+COD Ghosts-$249

Wii U+Gamepad+Mario Kart 8-$299

Gamepad+Nintendo Land-$99

Gamepad+Watch Dogs-$129

I think they should show the few third party developers that are supporting them that they appreciate it.

I'm afraid of buying a WiiU now, not gonna spend 300 dollars on a console that might get slashed pretty soon. And Nintendo acts as if nothing's going on.

Seriously, Wii U is now officially being Dreamcasted. They might want to carry on the console for 4 more years with terrible losses or just give up on the Home console business. Unless miracles happen, that's the only 2 options they have.

9 million Wii U sold during the FY, 1 Billion operating profit and the HW forecasts predictions will fall short so badly (Wii U will be lucky to sell 4 million on the FY), and serious consequences will arise from that during the shareholders roundtable for the end of the FY. Won't be surprised if there are resignations en masse, or if stocks drop to abysmal and scary levels. Won't even be surprised if there's physical violence during the presentation, to be honest.

Nintendo probably let their only chance to recover fly past. Farewell.

Don't listen to the idiots that keep spewing the doomed threads.  They're just butt hurt because "their" console didn't finish 1st last gen.  I don't see Nintendo "slashing" the price especially with some of their biggest titles coming out soon.  In the end it's up to you.  If you want to play great games like Super Mario 3D World (I have it and it's awesome), then buy the system, but dont let haters make up your mind for you.  Also, the 220,000 units we're talking about here was just in the US....still not great, but not dead either.

If everyone had listened to the haters, where would the 3DS be now?

Dropping early 2015 would mean one big thing: losing costumers and investors trust. Look at it this way, if Nintendo drops the Wii U early 2015 that would mean no Zelda for the Wii U, you realize what would that mean? First: pissing off your fanbase, which won't buy your next console. Second: losing all the money you invested in the game's development.

I used Zelda as an example but this applies to any game. Nintendo strategy imo should be this: keep the 2014 lineup as it is, after that make "small" games, have only Zelda and maybe some few other games as big AAA tittles, the rest should be games with small development time and small costs (but not to the point of indie, I'm talking DKC or 3D World levels), have a steady flow of games during 2015 and 2016, and in 2017 launch the new console.

Of course what I mentioned won't make the Wii U sell well (probably nothing will), but it will at least be profitable, will keep the small fanbase happy and investors probably won't complain that much.

I win.

Well since you acknowledged that nothing will make the WII U rise up why should nintendo keep pleasing their hardcore fans if their not even going to get a big profit. If I were nintendo I would let go of the WII U and go on to making a successor to the WII and not the gamecube. The WII U is essentially a gamecube 2.0. I would bring back motion controls for the next nintendo console and start by giving a massive budget to 2D mario while bundling it with the WII.

All that is fine and dandy, but the wrong part is the timing. Nintendo can't release this "Wii 2" so early, not without some huge consequences. Same as with the Gamecube, they might as well keep the Wii U support for 2 or 3 years, have most of their profits come from the 3DS and make at least a little bit of money out of the Wii U (at some point the system will become profitable)

After that then they can make the Wii 2 without pissing customers and investors off, Nintendo has plenty of money in the bank, so they can definitely survive this whole gen without the Wii U selling like cupcakes, and start preparing the next console.

They definitely have alot of money but the 3DS has being underperforming so far. Hopefully this disaster will teach them a lesson by going the way of the gamecube. Even if nintendo screws up in the handheld space their pretty much always gonna be the winners.

Markets change and a product is not always going to outsell it predecessor, but I'd say owning 85.7% of the handheld market is not "under performing".  Is it on track with the DS...no.  The PS3 has only sold a little over 50% of the PS2, but it is still a great system and a relative success...right?  The only disaster so far has been all the haters spewing crap at ever chance they get.  Do you really think that all that negativity helps at all?  I don't are if the Wii U was ten times more powerful then the PS4, haters are going to hate.  They just need to grow up.

Welp. I guess Wii U is over.

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

I am a fan of Nintendo but they deserve the low sales of Wii U. What were they thinking believing a touchscreen on a controller would bring back the masses for the Wii successor? Nintendo should have been bold with another revolution by going AR Glasses gaming. This is the obvious (to me) next step in moving gaming forward.

Imagine wearing the AR glasses playing a Wii tennis game where the tennis ball coming towards you 'jumps' out of the screen onto the floor of your living room and hitting the ball more realistically with the Wii remote as it approaches you? Or imagine playing a Metroid prime game where the HUD is outside of the TV screen and head tracking for with minor head movements for more accurate and quick viewing?

Nintendo missed the boat by revolutionizing gaming again but played it safe and that's why the 100 million Wii owners won't come back for a second round. A touchscreen on a gamepad is not innovative, creative, fresh, nor exciting. Nintendo needs to really think outside of the box for their next console to get another stampede like at E3 2006 for the Wii. I wouldn't doubt they are considering AR glasses for their next console.

Too expensive? They could have just reused the Wii hardware to get it under $450. At least this hypothetical console would have sold more than Wii U.

The PS2 was around 100m when the PS3 released though, so closer to 67-80% depending on how you look at it.

Also, the portable market isn't quite Nintendo's anymore:

Either way, not sure how we got here from the OP...

Perhaps not, but it's the only play they realistically have left. Besides none of their games really *needs* the Gamepad other than Nintendo Land and Game & Wario and no one sure as hell is buying the Wii U for that.

Drop the gamepad, drop the price to as cheap as possible.
