Forums - Gaming - Why the Last of US is NOT GOTY (pseudo-review)

Definitely not GOTY or a 10/10. The storyline is superb, but in the end I found myself playing to advance the storyline more than to enjoy the game.

Gameplay suffered as a result of the story-centric design. Segments where unlimited ammo were given broke immersion and having a partner that could walk around shouting at you while you're hiding, while enemies ran straight past them didn't help either. The gameplay repetitively cycled between stealth scene, action scene, water puzzle and interactive cutscenes.

I played on normal and the difficulty was fine, but a survival-horror TLOU is not. Instant respawn moments before death makes death meaningless in the game, and the game was more action than horror.

Overall an 8.5/10. Would have made an excellent movie or mini-series, on par or better than Walking Dead (when it was still good)

I also got a PS3 this year and i got all uncharted games and recently the last of us. My opinion is that the games a good but incredibly overhyped. I like them, but i dont love them.

One of the things that I wish Naughty Dog left out of the game was the listen mode. After playing the game on Survivor and being forced to play without it, I felt like the game really captured the anxiety of a survival/horror, minus the fact that my memory of the enemy placements was still a bit fresh from my initial hard playthrough. Had the game released without the listen mode, I imagine more people would have experienced a bit more spontaneity in the combat, as opposed to sneaking around with ease because of the listen mode.

Regardless, it's still my personal pick for game of the year (well, that and maybe Gone Home), although I really wish I had a Wii U to play Super Mario 3D World (played the bulk of the other popular nominees like Bioshock Infinite, GTA V, Tomb Raider, etc.).

a gamer that knows what's best and understands that a game like TLOU comes once in a generation! :D

It wasn't GOTY because of GTA V. Any other year, it probably would of been GOTY

Prediction: Switch 2 will outsell the PS5 by 2030

But Last of Us was the 4th Naughty Dog game last gen.

Tried playing this game twice from the start...got about 1/3 through the first time probably 2/3rds second time. Some good bits here and there and the game looks great overall...I just feel like every different location is somewhat repetitive. Sneaking through an area until all the guys/zombies are dead and you found all the loot, then you move on to a new location and do the same thing over again. Maybe stealth games just aint my bag (mind you I've enjoyed overs)

Naughty Dog can't do gameplay for shit. Uncharted is unbearable. Going from Gears with its perfect gameplay, cover and shooting to Uncharted is like downgrading from a Bentley to a VW jetta. Puzzles and melee combat is beyond laughable. This improved with TLOU, only slightly though.

Naughty Dog however can make good characters. Great characters in fact in the case of TLOU and their studio has the best motion capture tech ever seen in a video game. It is a great game, just not that great to play.
