I don't think ginger is derogative, it just means red-haired. I guess some assholes may have used it as an insult but the word itself is not an insult. Just like you could use the word 'black' to "insult" someone if you're an ass.

I guess it's possible. But on the early days of this site everybody was calling each other a fanboy and the discussions weren't really worse. I wouldn't say better neither.. at the end of the day is a pretty meaningless word so I find weird that is viewed almost as the ultimate offense on this site.
