Holy ****

PS3 pwned DS and 360 ? woooow!
That is a very very good performance for Sony, in the US !

I think nobody could predict this...
Let's update vgchartz numbers :)

Well said ioi. Now given absolutely everything ioi just said is absolutely spot-on and logical, can we simple all accept that some very strange things happened in the American market this January and both VGChartz and NPD probably made some sizable errors as a result of this?

starcraft - Playing Games = FUN, Talking about Games = SERIOUS

Hah, oh man some people just see it as being impossible.

" NPD OBVIOUSLY made an error, it cant be ANY different!"

So when Wii and 360 are running all front seems to be the only time when the NPD is credible, eh?

Again, the SMG LTD numbers between NPD and VGC are almost an exact match. While NPD may have reported lower numbers in January than VGC, they might have been higher in Nov and DEC.

Doesn't NPD have a history of realising their previous numbers were incorrect, and deciding to modify their next numbers to take that into account, rather than admit they made a mistake? If VGC ends up closer to the "real" numbers than NPD, then I'm guessing that's the main reason.

Anyway, I recommend we all wait a while, and see what happens because

1. VGC has been more accurate than NPD before. Last time in December.

2. All the other analysts were much closer to VGC. I never pay much heed to their long time predictions, but on the short term they tend to know what they're doing.

3. ioi seems confident with his numbers, and just look at how sexy he is. You can't argue with that.

 I don't think there's anything to accept.

NPD is the industry accepted standard for US sales datas. They cover 60% of the market which is a HUGE sample and they have all the instruments to make a fairly accurate estimate of the total.

Remember that all the three manufacturers Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo considers NPD so reliable that they make press releases and official comments about their performance on NPD datas. If NPD wasn't reliable they wouldn't accept the datas as represenatative of their performance. VGcharts isn't even in the same league of NPD in tracking sales considering the disparity in resources and money behind them, and it would be fool to think otherwise.

BUT Vgcharts  is a really useful place to get updated worldwide sales data every month and the weekly charts have the purpose to give the idea of sales trends but they need to be corrected when official numbers come out, I like this site because sales are continually adjusted to be accurate and I don't want this to end because of some kind of pride or unwill to admit mistakes.

As things stands now Vgcharts is strongly overtracking the 360 in the US market, 10.87m cannot be accurate with NPD putting the360 at 9.3 in NA, it should be 10.23 according to the 1.1 rule I'm reading here for canadian sales.  And PS3 of course has been slightly undertracked.

Hmmm so 375,000 nunchucks sold but only 270k wiis? seems strange as people usually buy a wii with a second controller and wii play's number is smaller than the number of nunchucks sold, makes no sense, looks like NPD is undertacking sotware then

the nunchuck with wii play is 10 dollars extra. some people just want an extra controller and don't want to spend more money than they have to... how is that undertracking? some people also buy more than one controller. some peoples controllers break

You are mixing up the controllers. The nunchuck is the extra bit with a control stick.... You can't get a nunchuck with Wii play. That does in fact seem very odd, after all Wii play I guess sells about half of remotes each month, so the total number of remotes being sold seems to be less than the nunchucks? What's up with that?

Wrong.....NPD is the ONLY viable PROFESSIONAL video game sales tracking firm in the US market.  Sony, Nintendo and Microsoft all have little choice but to acknowledge them as the primary third-party tracker, and doing so is in no way an indication of their perveived trust in NPD's numbers.
