This is how I would make it:
-Ditch the second screen, I would keep a single 720p capacitive screen.
-Give it the same button layout as the 3DS, only add the second circle pad.
-For graphics, a Tegra 5 processor or equivalnet (so Ps3/360 level)
-It would be able to play games on TV using a docking station: it would use wireless controller and wiimotes for remote play.
-2 version: the standard with a 4" screen and an XL with a 7" screen. Optionally a 3D version or a TV version (like PsVita TV).
-Release date 2017, price about 199$
-Name: "GameboyHD" or simply "Gameboy"

I have reservations about nintendo ditching the second screen, but it is possible.  They are going to do their design will the "kid" market in mind.  I'm not sure if they will follow a similar paradigm of the Sony portables.  They would definitely have to carve out a distinctive hardware look.

The dual screen was a novelty in 2004 but now it's not so unique anymore, Kids and people in general are accostumed to use large capacitive screens on smartphones and tablets, a small touch screen with a stylus is becoming a bit anachronistic. Also I think their next handled should be able to play games on TV (Mostly for multiplayer games), and it would be too complicated to adapt games designed for dual screens.

Since my theory in the other thread was a mix of console and handheld, i'm just going to copy paste it in here:

~~ What I hope to see is a 2 in 1 gaming device (yes like many people think): a handheld that interacts with a ''TV box'', basically a Wii U but with the gamepad being the size of a DS and which fits your pocket

- Games will use cartridge or any alternative that can hold lots of data while still being small. They will be inserted in the handheld.
- The ''box'' which will let you play your games on the TV simply acts as a signal converter between the handheld and TV. With no input lag using Wii U's technology.
-The handheld will be able to produce Wii U-like graphics on its small HD screen (720p), and 1080p when being streamed through the box, to the TV. The handheld will also act as a controller, and playing on the TV will add some features (like in Windwaker HD for instance), but games will not focus on dual screen gameplay.
-All Nintendo developers will now only have to focus on 1 platform, thus, we might not have any game drought. And no need to buy 2 gaming devices.
-Price point could be 300$ or 250$, we're talking about Wii U graphic capabilities but scaled down to fit the handheld (Vita size or smaller).
-You can use your Wii U gamepad for local multiplayer games, or the pro controller. Wii remote compatibility might be removed.
-Most likely no backward compatibility with games.
-No more 3D screen, Nintendo knows most people don't care about it (I think).
-Back to the GBA design, meaning only 1 screen, but with more buttons (Wii U gamepad with smaller screen, and two 3DS circle pad)
-No more Wii name or DS name. Something like Nintendo Revolution or simply ''Nintendo''.
-4G for online multiplayer on the go.
-Uses Nintendo Network account, which will let you download all the VC games of your Wii U/3DS.
-Release it with 3 big 1st party title day 1 for maximum market penetration.

*What if it fails? How are they going to make money?
-How could it possibly fail when you have all Nintendo games in one package instead of 2? It would also be a lot easier to market. Remember Nintendo hardware sells only on the back of their games, nothing else.

*But history tells us Nintendo will release their next handheld in less than 2-3 years!
-Maybe they will take a different route this time and release it in 4 years? Or perhaps it's going to be possible to release it in 3 years...

If the theory doesn't make sense, please tell me so. I guess they could also make some kind of VR machine, but I really doubt it, I see it more as an accessory down the road.

PS: Nintendo hinted us when they said they were going to merge their console and handheld departments, why would they do that in the first place? They are also expanding their Kyoto HQ! see photos here for proof:

Nintendo HDS ( http://nintendohds.com )

Nintendo always tries to make use of less powerful hardware in order to gain more profits and make the device cheaper which is must for parents to buy. So, i don't expect them to use the technology very well in their next Gen handheld, by the time when they release next handheld and i'm sure it will be less powerful compared to mobiles/tablets and mostly close to vita levels performance. I say all this because so far they are trying less powerful hardware with DS, Wii, 3DS and Wii U recently.

GAMING is not about spending hours to pass/waste our time just for fun,

its a Feeling/Experience about a VIRTUAL WORLD we can never be in real, and realizing some of our dreams (also creating new ones).

So, Feel Emotions, Experience Adventure/Action, Challenge Game, Solve puzzles and Have fun.

PlayStation is about all-round "New experiences" using new IP's to provide great diversity for everyone.

Xbox is always about Online and Shooting.

Nintendo is always about Fun games and milking IP's.

I think it's way too early for this topic as it won't be revealed until at the earliest 2015

HDS like others have said sounds good as a name for it. not sure if they will stick with two screens with a much larger top screen than 3DS though

Reminds me of this thread I made a few weeks ago. We think alike.

Don't expect a new DS until 2017 at the earliest. Handheld generations tend to be longer than home console generations, and the 3DS has years to go.

Nintendo 4DS with hyper realistic graphics.

I think we're looking at a 2018 launch, but it depends on how well the 3DS legs out; they could push for a new console in 2017. Not sooner than that though, which means I don't think we'll be seeing it in 2015.

The real problem I see is what they're going to call the damn thing. I don't think they should drop the second screen approach, which means we're looking at another DS. So what's its name?

4DS.

It will show all 3 physical dimensions and control time on the 2D screen.

Next up is the 5DS which will include another dimension of space.

And people say Nintendo's systems are underpowered!
