They'll go with a tablet like every human on earth.

I think we'll see the 3DS successor sooner than people think.

This is the peak 3DS year IMO, it'll probably sell around 16-17 million for the fiscal year, next year it will drop back down to 13-14 million.

A far cry from the DS' hey day where it was crushing 30 million per fiscal year at its peak.

I could see a Nintendo "tablet" for 2015.

not sure about tablet, but yes I agree, successor comes sooner than later.  Nintey managing 2 portables is not out of the question, while driving the market forward on their new piece of hardware, much like the 3DS.  Depending on design, branding is a big question as well.

Inspired by the title of another thread present on VG chartz, it got me thinking about the real question concerning 3DS successor.  I know many people are living in fantasy world dreaming of Nintendo's death in the hardware market, but the only successor we should be thinking about at the moment is the 3DS'.

I know it hasn't been out too long, but as we have seen multiple handhelds can exist in the market from Ninty.  So what do you guys think Nintendo's next approach will be and do you think a reveal in 2015 at e3 is out of the question?

HDS wont come out intill 2017/2018. Why reveal something so early, it'll kill some 3DS sales

I disagree, I don't see it coming that late, portable landscape is not the same as it used to be and I think Nintendo will take the initiative.  I could see an early 2017 release, but wouldn't push it past that, however, I make these statements knowing I can be completely wrong

I hope not

There was another thread... maybe not on this site... that showed the historical versions Nintendo has done over its portable life and 2014/2015 should contain some sort of 3DS revision while 2016/2017 will be the successor.

Though I honestly can't think of what they'd revise. They have a pretty great physical styling for hte 3DS, have a larger XL and they have a 2DS for those who are younger or simply don't want clam shell design.

I'd bet 3DS (2015) would simply either be a model with better battery life and/or continued variations on colors and unique IP related skins.

It wouldn't make sense to really do anything else, unless it was another 2D variant with a clam shell format. But that seems silly as you can just turn off the 3D for the same effect.

Is it possible to see gradual upgrades to the DS Brand rather than full on reveal or is that out of the realm possibility based up Nintendo's approach and philosophy in the market?

when you say 2017, do you mean early 2017 or more around Christmas 2017?

If it is a tablet, I wonder if they would just make a fully portable Wii U with more "apps." It would at least help out Wii U sales, right?

I just edited to say 2016/2017... so late 2016 or early 2017 in at least one major region.

completely agree, but do think they will hold a reveal in any capacity until 16 or reveal something in 15?  Now, that I think about it, I might lean more towards a 16 reveal, but not completely sure.
