No, not anymore, previously yes, but the fact that you HAVE to have it in order to play PS4 online is just bullshit and devalues the service in general in my opinion.

For the Free to Play games, Online is still free.

What if I tell you that I don't care about most of these games? I already have PS+ for quite some time now and I basically like the service itself - BUT - it still feels like it lost of its value by the simple fact that it isn't just elitistic stuff but actually a requirement to be able to enjoy something that is considered a standard function for a console by me. Previously, it was a choice to go for PS+, now I feel forced to do so.

In some cases, it's still a choice, it really depends on the playstyle of the consumer. You are probably in the majority, that prefers to play online with other people, oftentimes, I would rather play alone, or with a group of friends. I get hundreds of requests a week from the people I deal with on my Youtube Channel to do certain things, and unfortunatly, time limits what I can do.
Back to topic, if you are the type of person that enjoys Call of Duty, Battlefield, Killzone, NBA 2K14, Assassin's Creed, etc, then yes, you are going to feel forced to pay for the subscription, and I can see the argument there. The longer someone owns a Plus membership, the more benefit you receive. Games you purchased physically can be sold to recoup the costs, or you have a copy to loan to a friend.
For 30 bucks(If you are smart and wait until Black Friday to buy the membership), it's not overwhelming, you will pay double that for a controller, for most games, and you will pay that much to go out to eat, or to the movies ONCE, sadly.
My parents used to hate on me because I was paying $14.99 a month to play World of Warcraft, because I stuck with ONE game for 4 years, I ended up banking $20,000, I don't own the game, and I never will, but sometimes renting a service is a much better deal than buying the stuff outright. Will I be bummed if Sony ever goes under? Yes. By buying physical will I lose my games? Never.
In my eyes, the bigger evil is Music Unlimited as our only source for music right now, that was the worst decision Sony could've ever made, besides the LiveArea Limits(100 Apps) on the Vita, which is horrible code.
Everyone has a different playstyle or how they enjoy their time, not a thing wrong with that. I just feel there is a ton of value with Playstation Plus, and why I feel the subscription is worth it. It also gives me the chance to try out games I normally would never look at. And on that note, I really enjoyed some of the free offerings, especially Just Cause 2.
