Forums - Gaming - Digital Foundry vs. AC4 PS3/360/WiiU/PS4/XB1/PC

I feel kind of bad for wii u owners, then again, with the sales of assassins creed 3, they should be lucky that this game is coming to the wii u

No offense, but it's true.

Multiplats are only inferior because the devs have 8-9 years experience with PS3/360 hardware and invest considerable money and effort into those platforms, while they only have two years experience with Wii U and make the bare minimum of effort because they don't expect it to sell.

Need for Speed Most Wanted U and Trine 2 Director's Cut show what happens when a competent dev actually tries to make a quality Wii U port. Both were superior to the PS3/360 versions in a numbers of ways.

The hardware is a step up. More than twice as much RAM available for games, more than three times as much eDRAM as 360, DX10/11 equivalent GPGPU.

2 games that benefited from extra dev time because they came out later , and 2 games, that had very slight advantages, while most wiiu ports are 6-10 fps behind current gen versins rendering them almost unplayable imo, just look at ps4 vs xbone, ps4  is only 40% more powerful yet every game has an advanatge, and some which are huge, if we go be the insider specs, wiiu has less shaders, a weaker cpu, and can't do hd installs, which all show in mulitplatform games.

Hello Ninjablade. :)

"Insider info" from neogaf is not a legitimate source; it's unreliable speculation by a bunch of anonymous nobodies.

Trine 2 and Need for Speed's "extra dev time" was simply because it took time to port to a different architecture. Both devs stated that the Wii U's greater capabilities allowed for the improvements they made. Frozenbyte even said the Wii U version of Trine 2 could not be done on PS3/360.

Trine 2 on Wii U is superior in terms of:

- Screen resolution

- Texture Resolution

- Anti-aliasing

- Water effects

- Physics

- Normal map compression

Need for Speed wins in terms of:

- Texture resolution

- Reflections

- Framerate

Other ports lag behind because they are lazy rushjobs.

who is ninjablade, anyway i'm not argue with you we will agree to desagree. ill trust reliable sources other then fanboys that claim every single port is a rushed port cause it dosen't run on there system of choice well.

Rayman Legends looks great on every platform. AC4 is an open world game.

Ubisoft could probably do better with the WiiU version...but to blame them for hardware decisions made by Nintendo is overly harsh.

Atleast Ubisoft gives Nintendo full support. Which is much better than other 3rd parties.

This isn't the hardware, nor was AC3 or other port issues.

This is the fact that they are using a engine made for completely different architectural types and force-fitting it on a more modern setup.

All current gen consoles use GPGPUs as their main powerhouse with smaller OOO CPUs and more streamlined RAM.

Last gen consoles used powerful CPUs and ordinary GPUs with disconnected RAM.

That is polar opposites.

Ubisoft took their rushed and nonoptimed AC3 engine and simply resused it for AC4. They should have taken their new engine for PS4Xbone and downported to Wii U. Would have cost a little more, but would have made a far better game. This is what they are reportidly doing for Watch_Dogs. Hopefully it pays off with a good game as I am looking forward to this one.

Need for Speed and Pikmin3 prove if you dedicate proper resources you can make a good port.
Mario3DWorld proves it can handle things not possible on PS360. As I'm sure 2014 Nintendo games will continue to show.

This was simply a super cost cutting measure likely due to low sales of Wii U in general. But I don't think the cost of using the new engine would likley have been that much greater than reusing the known defective engine.

mario 3d world doesn't prove anything,  it's not doing any thing above 360/ps3. I  also don't understand how you want ubi to port the xbone/ps4 versions to wii u, when wii u can't even run the currentgen versions. the sad reality is the hardware is only slightly better then current gen and in some ways worse

Did you even read his whole post?

The evidence that they are rushed ports is blatantly obvious; it's on a system with more than twice as much RAM, but they haven't even buffed the textures like Need for Speed and Trine 2 did. This exposes them red-handed as straight 360 ports without any effort made to utilise the system's advantages.

yea he baiscally says they should have downported the nextgen version to wiiu, which is silly cause that's what the current versions are.

Don't worry everyone, I have the pics.

I believe they were going for a Skyward Sword-like art filter for Nintendo fans on the Wii U version :P

..can't think up a joke for the XB1 version.

Woah there is a rather larger difference between the PS4 and X1 version. Although my copy of ACIV doesn't look anywhere near as jaggy as that X1 picture looks (actually looks better than the PS4 picture) so I'm wondering if they took close ups or something so you notice the difference so much more than you normally would.

They are closeups.

why would they waste there time on doing that when they are struggling to get it to run at an acceptable frame rate, cause of the hardware issues.

That definitely makes sense...still, I must say I am a bit jelly about how much better the PS4 version looks (looks like the PC version or better at times).
