Forums - Gaming - What are the biggest countries in terms of HW and SW sales??

got into an argument with a guy on another site about the whole WiiU being outsold by PS4 and XBO in UK. It was reported on a Nintendo fansite but for some reason he called them out as Sony fanboys. sure a Nintendo fansite is run by Sony fanboys, makes perfect sense. Anyway he said they were cherry picking news to make WiiU look bad because UK is irrelevant. WHAT THE FUCK IS HE SMOKING? I told him the UK have he 3rd biggest market but he said that they werent even close to 3rd and that UK ≠ Europe (um sure, I never said that and EU combined is 2nd anyway). So I understand Im going off of somewhat dated facts so I wanted to know if he was even close to not sounding like a complete fucking retard?

So can we put an order together on HW and SW sales by country

In my opinion it's,
1. USA
2. Japan
3. UK
I could be wrong of course.

I was actually having an argument over this same issue the other day. If your strictly talking about Europe, then the U.K. is the biggest video game market on the European continent in terms of software and hardware sales, despite other countries having more people in them. The U.K. is also the third biggest single national market after the U.S. and Japan. You can see this all by looking at the weekly charts here on VGchartz. Nintendo is pretty weak in the U.K. do to the tastes of gamers there being that they prefer fps and sports games, so its not cherry picking to say that the Wii U is doing bad there, but people shouldn't be surprised when the Wii U doesn't sell there and try to use that as omg the Wii U is doomed.

The UK is definitely either 2nd or 3rd.

You do know this is a site that tracks the sales of console hardware and software right?

Here's a clue: UK accounts for 18% of total Europe sales.

I got into a similar argument with a guy from this site a couple days ago. If we take home consoles only then it's the second biggest market, same number of consoles sold as japan but in the last couple years software sales have been significantly higher in the UK than Japan. If handhelds are included as well then Japan becomes second.

haha thanks, last time I checked Yearly it wouldnt go past 2011. guess it was updated or just being retarted last time

Don't argue with people about sales on sites other than VGC or NeoGAF. Maybe 1% of posters on other sites have any idea what they are talking about. And I think UK is 4th biggest single country market for video games overall revenue wise after US, Japan, and Brazil, although same as US and to a lesser extent Japan, it's sales a bit inflated due to a lot of people importing from those countries.

So it is happening...PS4 preorder.

Greatness Awaits!

this was the one I thought may have surpassed UK when I was having the arguement. But he was clearly a clueless fanboy so it didnt really matter.

Of course if you're talking Wii U specifically then at the moment everywhere is irrelevant except USA and Japan. Those two countries account for almost 75% of Wii U sales to date.

2013 to date total console sales in UK is about 19.5% of US sales. Wii U UK sales for 2013 is 15% of US sales. That's quite a big difference and is quite a concern for Wii U. Comparing to Wii LTD UK is 21% of USA.

Even more concerning for Wii U is that total Europe sales of all consoles for 2013 is higher than total USA sales of all consoles., But the reverse is true for Wii U, Europe Wii U 2013 sales is only about 70% of USA sales.

If Wii U was selling in Europe in the same proportions to the USA as Wii did then Wii U would have sold 1.3 million units by now, not only 900K.
