How does BD compare to other JRPGs you´ve played over the last 5 years or so?...is it one of the better games?

My review is up: http://gamrconnect.vgchartz.com/thread.php?id=174590&page=1#

In short, the answer is yes and no.

Edit - Dear goddess i'm gonna wear out the X button if I have to awaken all the crystals in more chapters. That should have been an automatic cutscene now >_>.

You don't have to trigger like mad. Pressing the X button a couple of times per second does the job easily.

And hahahahahaha.

I read your review.I went and saw the spoilers anyway, and man, that last part is highly disappointing. Also, I´m (negatively) surprised microtransactions have found their way to a 3DS game, the last place I expected to see one, how naive of me.

Rol, what´s the best RPG for the 3DS, in your opinion?..is it still BD, despite your 6.5 score?...or Pokemon, SMT, etc..?

I haven't played Pokémon and SMT is still not out in Europe. Etrian Odyssey IV is pretty good (I scored it 8.5), followed by Fire Emblem: Awakening (no review yet, but would be in the range of 7.8-8.3) and Mario & Luigi: Dream Team Bros. (8.2). The Tales of the Abyss port is also solid and despite some lengths in its story, it's still better than Bravely Default.

How would you rate EO IV over the previous 3 entries in the series? I played all of them myself, I'd just like to know your opinion.

It's the best. The series got better with each entry. EO II increased the speed of battles and added the auto-battle function, EO III added subclasses and EXP gains for completing quests to make it less grindy, EO IV cleaned up the skill trees, gave you an instant bestiary and added rows for enemies among other things. Much of those things might only be incremental improvements, but they all added up to make the games more enjoyable to play with each new entry.

I see. Personally, I think EO IV downgraded some aspects in relation to EO III, especially in the skill tree department. I didn't quite like the simplification of it all, it leaves you very little room for character customization, as the trees are very limited in useful skills per class. Also, while EO III sea exploration had an actual meaning to it, EO IV world map is mostly an after thought with very little interest in it's exploration.

Going back to BD, I get why Chapter 5 - 8 felt the way it does for you. So far, Chapter 5 kinda makes sense, but I don't see how it could drag for more 3 chapters of the same thing. A shame, the game is really good and cohesive until chapter 5.

Eh, most of the skills that were removed or limited in EO IV were a waste in EO III, and due to the lower caps for many skills, you can actually build more flexible characters in EO IV. In the previous three games you poured ten points each into a handful of skills and that was it, otherwise you would have never had a really powerful character.

You sure about the sea map in EO III being better? You had only a limited amount of steps you could take before being sent back to the harbor. Meanwhile, you can go as you please in EO IV and unlock new labyrinths. So I feel the opposite is the case, EO III's sea was an afterthought while EO IV's world map is integrated into the overall experience. This also shows when you play the games; in EO III you can basically ignore the sea as you don't have to go there even once to finish the story.

The same happens to EO IV skills. They're borderline useless unless you pour the maximum amount of points in them, just like in any other EO. The Nightblade class suffers from this heavily, as their status effects, even when subbed to Arcanist are almost non-stickable on end-game/post-game enemies unless you max the specific skill and support you want to max. Which reminds me, there were even fewer synergies between classes than in EOIII.

What I mean in afterthought is that the sea map actually had a story of it's own, it was basically it's own quest. The step-limiter was a pain, but that actually made sense in the context of the exploration (and it wasn't detrimental at all once you reached the highest level of food available). The world map on EOIV only exists to connect the dungeons, nothing more. There's very little action going on in it in the main game, only having a bit more when you get into post-game with the Dragons.

Yes, but the caps for skills are lower, meaning that you can max out more skills and thus have more flexible builds. But I already said that in my last post.

There wasn't really anything happening in EO III's sea. EO IV's world map actually had quite a few quests in it which easily matches whatever was in EO III. Plus various dungeons gave a greater sense of adventure than one single labyrinth. For EO V I hope that they extend the size of those smaller caves.

Well, we'll agree to disagree then. Overall I found the experiences between EO III and EO IV similar, because they each had different strengths, I just didn't like some of the paths they took with EO IV.

I agree with you about hoping that EO V should have bigger side dungeons or maybe a bigger impact in the overall game. They could probably also restructure the quest system so that it ties a bit more with the main plot, as having some quests that are essential for certain towns people, which would allow you to progress in the main game or some similar structure.

While there redudancy that Rol spoke of is very strong on Chapter 6, there's important bits of story going in each additional chapter.

Also, the title change once you reach chapter 6 was a pretty cool touch. And that 3 Sisters fight on the Conjurer optional class was the most insane fight in the game so far.

I have a question, does anyone know which level I should be in Chapter 3? I just defeated Praline.

I'm on lvl 41 because I was farming Mushrooms in the Miasma wood for Job Points and forgot to disable the Exp, so now everything Is so easy even on Hard mode :/
Also Is there any point where I can replace my Thief? I couldn't replace It yet because of the Steal Ability I need that to steal from every boss.

PS. Am I wrong or Is Praline the only Boss so far that didn't die after giving her Asterisk out?

I took on the Fire Temple boss at level 46 and even then it was very difficult on Hard, because his Energy Burst can even OHKO your characters while defaulting. So you might wanna gain a few more levels before you go there.

The asterik bosses on chapter 3 are pretty easy, when compared to the other asterik bosses, so they're not a good comparison point. Also, Praline is the first asterik holder that doesn't die when you defeat him/her, but there's a couple more on the next chapter too and as you go to further chapters, less of them die, due to sub-story reasons.

In relation to Thief, you can still change the class and have Thief as subclass, you'll still have access to Steal and with Thief Gloves you'll still have 50% chance to steal.

I take back what I said about the Venus Sisters fight on chapter 6. All the sub-story boss fights are ridiculous on Chapter 7/8, even on Normal.

Fighting 4 Bosses in a row, in a 2 -> 3 format fights is insane, especially when one or two of them can group-cast for almost all your HP.

Chapter 6 is the last one that has something relevant to the story. Chapter 7 and 8 don't do anything for the main storyline anymore while the asterisk bosses are re-organized into team fights; the dialogue changes make hardly any sense in conjunction with the three preceding worlds; it's more or less just an excuse to have team fights.

And yes, Praline is the only asterisk boss who doesn't die. She's just too schnuckelig for that to happen.

Yeah, I'm on chapter 8 now and I'm seeing that. I'm only doing the sub-bosses fight for their items now, since they have the best gear in the game. Going to do the normal ending first before the true ending.

And you forgot that Lester, Braev, Yulyana and Alternis don't die too. Plus Qada doesn't die if you kill Kamiizumi first too, I think.
