On the home console front, maybe. With the exception to the Wii, Nintendo have not been so well in that area since entering the N64 era. I wouldn't go as far as irrelevant (yet) for Wii U (will have to see how that plays out), but as industry standards go, Nintendo are definitely trailing behind Sony and Microsoft in that regard.

If in few years, the Wii U still not selling well and its sucessor.. then I think its time for Nintendo to just give up on home consoles and stick to what they are good at - portables. Maybe make a hybrid portable console that can also connect to the TV.

It's simply more anti Nintendo propaganda in the industry. Pay it no mind. It has been happening since the NES was launched in America in the mid 80s.. And it'll probably keep on happening for the forseeable future. It is as certain as death and taxes..

They operate like a toy company still and are unable to adapt to a lot of the changes in the market, especially as a lot of family/casual spending goes elsewhere.

Also that Sean Malstrom quote is utter and total nonsense, lol. Wii Sports Club, Wii Fit U, Wii Party U, Game & Wario, Nintendo Land, Sing Party, a giant tablet controller, underspeced chipset, no HDD, no account system for online, etc. are for hardcore players?

Nintendo is fairly irrelevant to third party game development.

Third parties want to make a specific kind of game for a specific type of audience that exists in abundance on Sony and Microsoft platforms.

Personally I don't mind that as all I want form my console is to game without the extra bells and whistles as I long to prolong the life of the systems I buy.

However you are right, they need to evolve to cater to the expectatiosn of the mass market and not people like me lol. i.e. the console needs to be a smart device not just a gaming console.
