they make reliable consoles.

Look at the gamecube as an example. May look like a lunchbox but drop that mfker from 20feet and it still works,

They do make reliable hardware, but their OS on Wii U is anything but reliable. Plus even bigger problem than the lack of stability and crashes that would require you to unplug the damn thing was how freaking slow it was at everything. They are much better at making games than they are at making a platform for gamers. They are overly cautious about online and still sticking to their attitude of no voice-chat even if they finally make one of their games online (Wii Sports Club). Instead they want you to submit Miiverse messages for approval so that you can map those approved canned messages to one of 3 directions on the D-Pad. That's what they consider "save" online communication. Basically you can bet on Nintendo being a generation or 2 behind on every trend. They were 1 generation late to HD, and now they are almost 3 generations late to taking online seriously. If they continue to improve and build on Nintendo Network and get that on 3DS and Wii U and a bunch of other things they still need... then they might be able to say they are only 2 generations behind when it comes to online. Until they have party-chat, they will not have caught up with MS/Sony. I would be all for Nintendo becoming just software. All their hardware innovations are new to market, but they are also generally the worst iteration of it... they are too content at being a toy and leaving their innovation at the gimmick stage. They don't know how to push and evolve a tech because they are much more focused on discovering the next gimmick by which to enthrall less demanding consumers. The video gamers Nintendo bred, have grown up, and they take gaming more seriously than a childs toy.

Personally I think Nintendo would be better off becoming a third party developer for home consoles. Wii was an anomaly, now they are back to the sales which can be expected from Nintendo.

If they would make third party games, they would not have to worry about lackluster HW sales and they would get more potential customers by bringing their games to PS4/Xbox One. Maybe even PS3/360 if they wanted to.

They don't have to, why is it so hard to understand that they don't lack money and their entry price barrier is so much lower? You are fucking expecting everybody to shell out 400-500+ USD with no fucking games whereas you can get a Wii U + 4 or more games for the same price lol.

Oh and alot of people say low price entry point, but they are putting way too much stock into that. That only works if people WANT the product to begin with. And the WIi U proves that. PS4 ane Xbone are much more expensive. and they both had WAY better launches than Wii U. And it looks like PS4 might pass it at least and that system is retailing for 400 and i dont see the price dropping. Hell i think GC was cheaper than PS2 at one point and look at what happened their.

If we were to go only by what happens at launch then the PS3 should have only sold 12 - 15 million. X1 and PS4 have won the launches but before those 2 consoles the Wii U had the best launch other than the PS2 ever. Let's wait and see what happens once no new games come out for months on end and when all the shooter fans already have their console, and a brand new Mario Kart and Smash Bros are released. If that doesn't move the needle for Nintendo then they have serious problems.

after launch WIi U sales dropped BELOW PS3, 360 AND the GC. Like you yourself said dont put too much stock into launch. Remember PS3 was 600 bucks and it was doing better than WIi U was all year, explain. Now Wii U could pull a PS3 or it could go either GC, im inclined to go more with the latter. Simply because it seems people here keep telling me to wait. All year people have been saying wait for holidays, and now its wait for next year. I will not wait.

Wait for what though? If there are games you want to play on it, buy it, if not, then don't, if you are poor, sucks to be you. If you only have 300 USD to spare no matter what and want to play video games, then you don't have a choice to start with.

Mind your language, young man. That is not appropriate and definitely not necessary.

They could easily be more profitable if they were out of the hardware business.

Going thirdparty is destructive for developers like Nintendo or Sega that have been so intertwined with their own consoles. Splitting their fans among several consoles will only be a disservice towards their fans.

I would, however, prefer if Nintendo and Sega went FIRST-party, and became part of one console developer. Then they can get the most out of their talents and and also not split the fanbase.

The problem is Nintendo have always made better games than SEGA so hellz no. I really really miss old school Phantasy Star though.

Well, that´s a whole other debate, but you are dead wrong (just look at how long us fans kept the Dreamcast afloat AFTER its discontinuation). Besides, what does that have to do with this issue?

As of now I need two systems to enjoy my Nintendo games. How many would I need to buy if Nintendo went third party?

Hell of a question, which would benefit gamers IMHO. People put stock in "Ninty makes money on their consoles" which doesnt mean a thing unless you are a stock holder, its not like that bolsters their libraries.

They are not suppose to be as big as MS or Sony, stock holders are fucking idiots to expect their business to grow without selling hardware since the profit margin is so much higher than games down the road with just 1 sales, then people buy their games which increases that even more. It's a business model that SEGA failed at and Ninteno is pulling off even to this day. Their corporate greed level is much lower than MS or SONY, and they are looking further ahead instead of instant gratification.

lower entry price point is good for a lot of people, and they are the only company that can carry their own consoles with their own games, I honestly haven't seen another console maker able to do that.

It is untrue.

GC/N64/WiiU proved you're wrong, nintendo cant really carry their own consoles with their own games.

The lower price is the only thing, but it should be much lower...

sure they did, they generated huge amounts of profit, it's not just console sales numbers along.

Dont change your subject, you're talking about consoles sales, not profit. ( and i really dont think they generate profit on WiiU... )

They did nothing Microsoft/Sony couldnt on home consoles

Predictions for end of 2014 HW sales:

 PS4: 17m   XB1: 10m    WiiU: 10m   Vita: 10m

That's so weird, I haven't ran into many issues with their OS, it was really slow at one point though, it's better these dayss.

Because Nintendo make consoles with more interesting interfaces and lower price points than their competitors.

just imagine how revolutionary and amazing Wii Sports would have been with this

Basically this. Without Nintendo, innovation in home console hardware will basically die. Not because Sony and Microsoft don't want to innovate, but because software publishers want their One Console to develop for. Why do people think MS put so much effort into Kinect only to have relegate it to changing channels?

I personally cannot wait for Nintendo to go third party on home consoles. I think it would be good for the industry as a whole and help to keep the wonderful franchises that Nintendo has more relevant. They are doing very well with the handheld market and I think that is a great place for them to stay but no more consoles Nintendo. Just put Mario, Zelda Kirby, Metroid etc. out on Xbox and PS and reap in the money.
