Forums - Gaming - Maybe Nintendo wasn't so wrong after all...

I still have to give you guys a serious review of my brand new WiiU (I'm somewhere in the middle of enjoying it a lot and, at the same time, thinking Nintendo jumped the gun a bit) but i've been too busy and am very tired right now.

Nonetheless I have just looked at the fresh chart in the first page and realised something I have not heard anyone saying around (and please forgive me if you have): they have just placed themselves right in the middle of the competition.

See, it is a bit more expensive than PS360, but it is newer and more powerful. AND it is not as powerful as the other 8th gen ones, but it is CHEAPER, has more games now, has solved many initial issues and is free to go.

It is an alternative (and a reasonably good one) to ANY of the other consoles. Ok, one might say NeoGeo was an alternative to SNes but bare with me a little: as a not so well informed customer, I get to a shop. The clerk shows me the options and by one side I have seven year old tech machines, even though cheaper, on the other I have brand new tech that is more expensive and comes with no games, AND, sitting right in between, the WiiU, which starts to show good value for money.

Sony and microsoft both have products that compete with the other ones from their own companies. The lack of support for Wii was a drag, but now it makes sense (for them, not me; I hated to be left with no options for so long).

Nice.
After all I say: now I have the damn games, my Wii U is on fire.

The Wii U's main problem is being in the middle, it's aimed at two markets, falling between two chairs and it's squeezed between two generations of consoles.
The entire Wii U strategy was an incredibly poor one, they clearly didn't think things through at all this time around.

Too bad you forgot to mention longevity. Right now it seems very safe to say WiiU wont last 3/4 years. The 8th gen machines are just starting what can be a life as long as 7 or 8 years. You may end up with a cheaper and dead system.

I just wish their marketing was better, though, for the sake of larger communities. Many a people I know don't have any idea WiiU exists.

Thanks for covering my back this time.

I agree with Mummelmann, of course.

I agree and It could help or it could hurt them. It could help if they can differentiate it enough from the competition or it could hurt them if people on a budget prefer PS3/360 and people who want a high end machine go for PS4/One.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

As impressive as my PS4 is, it's also as underwhelming as the Wii U felt on launch. All Nintendo need to do is keep cracking out awesome games, The PS4 currently isn't the mega leap that many are expecting and this will help Nintendo. Diminishing returns are clearly kicking in now, and with the right art direction, Wii U games currently look as good as the PS4 stuff I've been playing.

I'd be very surprised if Nintendo can't find an audience for the Wii U by the end of next year.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Getting the hardcore and the casual with one console is stupid. That is why the Wii U is stupid. They shouldn't have spread their focus.
