I think Nintendo was hoping the combo of NSMBU + Wii Party U hardware bundles + Wii Sports Club + Wii Fit U trial + Mario 3D World + Taiko Drum Master would cause a large boost and act as kind of a "relaunch" for the system in Japan. They were wrong.

Basically they were banking on the "Wii casual" + Mario fan audience carrying them this holiday. Casuals have betrayed them, I think that much is obvious. Only reason Wii Party U is putting up respectable numbers in Japan is because it comes bundled with the system whether you want it or not.

As a standalone release it's a bomb.

Yeah SM3DW is kinda bomb-ish but it can't do any better as long as the system isn't more widespread. This year's bundles don't cut it. Noone cares for Wii Sports / Fit / Party anymore, and it comes across as desparate to throw out so many different bundles. Nintendoland is just another minigame collection, you can't turn heads with minigames anymore. There's been hundreds! Even NSMBU... I first played it last weekend, and I was surprisingly underwhelmed. N have focused to much on repeating what worked last time around. Big fan of NSMBWii here, yet NSMBU just felt like I've done it all before. Based on just a few levels of world 3 in co-op, mind - so my opinion could change.

Kart is the one franchise that will just keep selling. Cause once you're hooked (and everybody is) you just want more tracks. It's going to be the #1 Wii U game.

The old "it was only out for 2-3 days!!!" excuse. It never fails, lol. I've heard it like a hundred times before.

Mario 3D World launched on a Friday, which is normal for any release in Japan. 4 days for an opening week is a normal week for any new game in Japan.

With no Fit/Sports crazes the system is just another GameCube. Mario Kart will provide a boost but not the one Nintendo fans think. Nintendo doesn't have anything on the table that appeals to non-Mario fans in a mass market fashion.

They bet the farm on the casual gamer coming back to them (at least 50-60% of them), they weren't counting on that market completely collapsing on them. That's the whole crux of the Wii U, if they knew that audience wasn't coming back, they would've probably made a very different system.

Looks like a 277k opening for Final Fantasy XIII Lightning Returns and just shy of 100k for Mario 3D World.

Ouch. I think both companies' are guilty over oversaturating these brands with too many games in a short period of time.

Too bad for Mario 3D World though, that's genuinely a great game. Also people holding out hope for a big hardware bump for the Wii U -- nope.

21k this week only. Vita dropped like a freaking rock too, lol, dat Vita TV bomba, 7k this week.

Not bad all for SM3dW, the install base for the WiiU probably is south from 1 million in Japan, at this rate, every WiiU owner from ther will buy the game till march, and would not surprise me if the actual install base go up 200k or 300k because of the game in the long run.

For FFXIII-3 , AMAZING sales for the second spin off from the, arguably, the worst game in the FF series in years, would not surprise me if this spin off broke the 1 million mark eventually.

For Vita TV, what do you expect? it is a guizmo, nothing more, if it sells a million worldwide Sony should be more than happy

My grammar errors are justified by the fact that I am a brazilian living in Brazil. I am also very stupid.

Holy cow, that Vita TV drop. After its pretty good first week, I didn't expect it to plummet that way. Guess Japan just doesn't care about home consoles. Or something.

If that bar lowers any further for Japan it may as well be touching the ground, lol.

If you look at WII-U main problem, Its a victim of same old same old franchises. Looking at everyone must have list of upcoming wii u titles and it a mix of MK WiiU, DK, Smash Bros, Yoshi and so on. Where are the 3rd party titles ? where are the difference makers ? where are the original IP's ? Gamers love these old feel good titles, but lets face it, there is way too many same old same old titles on the Wii-U. 1 console owners want a mixture of different experiences and i'm sorry but a Nintendo 1st party title line-up will not do it anymore.

First week of PSP Go was 30k
Secound week, 14k
third week, 6k
fourth week, 4k

Updated

Vita TV will do wost than it! Maybe we will see bumps on PS4 release and some "bundle" with Gaikai.

So I was wondering. Is this the end of the Wii U in japan? Can we call it a "dead" system there?
