Forums - Microsoft - Xbox One Cold Boot Takes 1 Minute and 8 Seconds, Runs Hotter, Consumes More Power In Standby Than PS4

I don't know where the Windows comment comes from, as MS has said that the XBOne does not run Windows, but a new OS designed from the ground up.

The new Xbox uses a couple of Operating Systems.
They have an "Xbox OS" which is probably a variation/evolution of the Xbox 360 codebase and a Windows Kernel derived OS for everything else which is all controlled by virtualisation.

It's not running Windows per-sey. However, the origional Xbox and Xbox 360 was using a variation of the Windows NT kernel too.

energy prices are going up in the UK, all my appliances I turn off at the twitch before Ulf days over.

I would not for a second think about leaving it all on just because I wanted a faster boot on my console lol

I'm sure a massive patch will be issued soon like the Wiiu

...not much time to post anymore, used to be awesome on here really good fond memories from VGchartz...

PSN: Skeeuk - XBL: SkeeUK - PC: Skeeuk

really miss the VGCHARTZ of 2008 - 2013...

Sure, but even Wii U was faster

Basically there should be no rrod type problem for the consoles. Look at how hot high end pc gpu's run http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/powercolor_r9_290x_oc/16.htm

thought the ps4 standby was 70w
http://www.dualshockers.com/2013/11/15/ps4-consumes-70w-while-downloading-in-standby-because-it-uses-the-main-apu-and-not-just-the-arm-chip/

heat is an issue, ps4 is running hot my tests concluded at least 10 degrees ferinheight more compared to 2nd model ps3 ive got 120 out the back of my ps4 thats pushing it i like to keep the peak exhaust air at 110 so im gonna be doing some mods the ps4 soon.

article is quoting DF temps 113 on the ps4 is actually the case itself the air coming out the back is much greater it even states this in DF article. by my test anything above or even at 140 would result in overheating protection being initiated and console failure

if this is true for the xb1 ill be surprised its got alot of vents and a external power i was even surprised at my ps4 tests that also has way more vent volume than any last gen ps3s

That's a GPU.
GPU's typically can handle 100'C-110'C before damage is incurred.
CPU's and APU's however AMD recommends 61'C as the maximum mean temperature as stated in their whitepapers, of course they can handle higher, but before they reach a point where damage may occur, the processor will shut down.
Historically however AMD's thermal monitoring has been off by 13'C as well which is a bug I noticed on all Socket AM3 and even my AM3+ FX 8120 processor.

Prior generation consoles didn't have power gating or thermal protection mechanisms, that's thanks to AMD that the consoles got it this time around.

Thanks for the info. Even at 50c max the ps4/xb1 are still generously below amd's max and as u said consoles this time around are getting thermal protection which again won't cause another rrod type fiasco.

heh, just to check there. took my PC 1m 20 secs to cold boot a E5300 dual core pentium @ 2.60ghz running windows Xp SP3 with a http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/internal-hard-drives/167469/hitachi-deskstar-p7k500-hdp725050gla360 as my HDD got a usb 500gb seagate HDD for storage attached too.

Would find it odd that my not up to date PC at all boots 12 seconds slower than the X1. I guess a long start up time for Kinect2.0? because the Xbox360 boots in about 20-30 secs unless you go by how long it takes for the kinect to finish saying "starting up" in the bottom right corner of the screen that would finish at around the 1m30s mark also.

Why not check me out on youtube and help me on the way to 2k subs over at www.youtube.com/stormcloudlive

Sure things like this can be updated. I remember my launch Wii U would take over 20 seconds just to go to system settings. Now it's down to like 8 seconds.

The 1 minute cold boot makes sense thought the Xbone has a powerful OS and it was designed to be on stand by mode for years.

By "Powerful" you mean unoptimized.  Linux is far snappier than Windows and it is used in super computers...

Did you ever use Linux on PS3? Well... And what does this have to do with PS4? It doesn't use Linux.

PS4 supposedly uses FreeBSD, which is similar to Linux.

http://www.extremetech.com/gaming/159476-ps4-runs-orbis-os-a-modified-version-of-freebsd-thats-similar-to-linux

I don't know where the Windows comment comes from, as MS has said that the XBOne does not run Windows, but a new OS designed from the ground up.

It is not similar. It is just in the title of the article with no reasonable arguments that support this and I know it is not.

And of course it is running a windows 8 kernel which is a crucial part of any operatong system. It is just heavily optimized for Xbone and will get further updates.
