If that's so, why has the PS3 sold so little in 2006 and presented an ever growing yearly sales during 4 consecutive years? And something similar happened with X360, which had its sales peak in the 5th year. I think it's the opposite: hardcore consoles sell well during the entire generation while casual / alternative consoles like Wii may have a boost in the first 2 or 3 years but then begin to decay.

Growing yearly sales were because of the decreasing price along with more games
I agree that hardcore consoles sell well during the entire generation, that's why, even with a successful launch, there will be a steep decrease after the holidays (like core games sales have a steep decrease after launch), and a slow increase in the coming years, that's why i said Ps3/Xbox360 trend over the coming years
people declare Ps4/XboxONE god consoles and doom the WiiU, but is not the case
Ps4/XboxONE probably won't sell well after holidays and 2014 (very high price, only a few games)
WiiU is pretty hard to predict, could even take off once the price gets lower and more Nintendo games come out, largely depends on families really, they may miss the Wii fun they had and want to buy the new stuff when it gets cheaper?
a reason Wii had huge sales the first 2 years is the low price, so it is important, similar case for 3DS
so, doom and praise threads are pretty much pointless at this time

More games I think every console has along the time As for the price cuts, I don't believe so. The Wii had great sales without any price cut (2006-2008) and decreasing sales when it became cheaper and heavily bundled with games and accessories (2009-2013).
I doubt there will be a steep decrease (greater than the usual) after the holidays. In what basis do you claim that? Very high price can't be a factor simply because neither XOne nor PS4 have such prices. Remember X360 came at 400 euros (by now that would be around 500 euros) and PS3 came at 600 euros (by now that would be more than 700 euros). Now you have XOne for the same 500 euros (but Kinect is included) and PS4 for almost a half of PS3's launch price. Those are very high prices?! The "few games" thing will hardly be a factor too. It's true that PS4 and XOne came earlier than expected but the devs have rapidly shifted their resources to both consoles and none of them will be hard to work with (like the PS3 was) so I don't expect big delays in the games to come.
As for the god consoles vs the doomed Wii U, I understand who has that view. Wii U is likely to be like Wii in terms of life-cycle weekly market share: greater at the beginning, smaller at the middle of the generation and eventually an early death. So if the console is already low at the beginning, what can we expect about it's future? Miserable sales in the next 2 years? Residual sales after 3 or 4 years?

the Wii was already cheap enough from the start, so price was not a limiting factor for the sales, so as long as people saw it was fun, they just got one
hm, Ps4 costs a bit more than 400, and XboxONE a bit more than 500, the prices are ok only compared to Ps3 and XboxONE launch prices, which consoles sold poorly after the launch, and without many games
WiiU is at 300 euro right now, which is much much cheaper than the other 2, cheap for a core gamer but still not cheap enough for most families! and you are right about the ''what to expect'' sales, however, WiiU is not as revolutionary as the Wii, so as with the 3DS, sales mostly depend on games and it will take longer for the sales to come, but they will come eventually
