Forums - Gaming - Sony made gaming cool.

I never saw an adult playing a Playstation except by my father... Most people always talked about gaming as something for kids, "Yeah give them the PS One and Winning Eleven, that will keep them entertained" I never associated Playstation with adults xD.

Sorry to break it to you nerds, but video gaming is not cool and has never been.

I think it depends on the person playing it

and also what that person does in their spare time.

Indeed you are right. It's not impossible to be cool and play video games, but playing video games will not make you cool. It's more of a detractment than anything, and yes, even though it used to be an even more fringe hobby, video gaming is still a nerd domain.

I think a lot of people who don't acknowledge Sony's changes (we'll call it that) to the approach of the video game market, probably don't really know what the gaming market was like in Europe.

I was actually an N64 gamer at the time PS1 was taking over the world, then Dreamcast just before the PS2 dominated and GCN then went on to become my next format of choice. I had the PS1 and PS2, but they never clicked for me.

I will not deny though,"lol those are all kiddy games" was frequently thrown at me at high school for choosing the N64. PS1 was perceived as the "cool" console. Even if a lot of the people deciding this were actually kids themsleves.

I have massive respect for what Sony did, but it was certainly very interesting when this generation MS played them at their own game. But it wasn't luck. You should read the book that was written about the PS1 a few years back which explains a lot of what went on business-wise. It's a shame it's out of print. I wish I'd got my own copy :(

Btw, when Sony unveiled the PS1, they were mocked. Remember the Dinosaur tech demo that was included on the original demo disc? They showed that off, but it was just the head, that was where the perception that the system was "weak" came from.

RIP Dad 25/11/51 - 13/12/13. You will be missed but never forgotten.

One thing i dont get is how i was able to play all these games in such a short period of time.

I was born in 1990 but i was able to play the hell out of Sega genesis, Snes, NES(a little bit), N64, PS1 and a couple others all before the PS2 came out. I didn't really acknowledge the ps1 until like 2 or 3 years after it released. but by the time ps2 came out, i had blazed through a bunch of PlayStation 1 games.

I played all that shit before 2001

looking back, I just dont see how i was able to do it

Sony was the only console that did everything right and incorporated them properly with marketing and multimedia. We got new formats and the first party titles were great as well. Before them since NIntendo was dominating games were seen as toys. Sony changed the perception that games were toys and could serve as competent electronics.

The more I think about it. Sony were just the first company to dominate all the territories at the same time.

In the 16 bit days, Sega gave Nintendo a damn good run for their money in the US. Did okay in Europe, but were actually 3rd in Japan to NEC's PC Engine.

The market was much smaller in the NES days, although Nintendo dominated the home console space, home computers such as the ZX Spectrum/Commodore 64/BBC Micro etc were very prevelant in some countries.

The PS1 was the first system to command a very large market share globally. They repeated this with the PS2. The PS3 however faltered in the US and some parts of Europe (particularly the UK) and has been dethroned in those places by the 360 which is why it's sales will never match the PS2.

It'll be interesting to see if they can return to global domination. I suspect MS have managed to chew off a large enough chunk of market share now that the "blip" of the PS1/PS2 success is over and we'll go back to much more segregated markets again.

I leave Nintendo out from PS3/PS4 cycles because I don't view them as direct competition. I'll always have a Nintendo console next to my other console just for the magic Nintendo churns out. That generally seems to be the case for most gamers.

I understand that you can game like a nerd, but they have games that even jocks like to play. My boys only play COD, Battlefield Madden and NBA2k. Wrinse and repeat. I am the nerd in the group because I play more than just that. They play certain games then get off and enjoy life. Seldom do they play more than those games and if they do it has to be super hyped up.

Honestly SEGA deserves credit for this.

They are the ones that started marketing to the MTV crowd, pushing sports games, more violent action games, etc. etc. etc. because they had to, they couldn't compete against Nintendo otherwise.

Sony just built off of what Sega had already set into motion.

Yoooooooooo

I swear its pretty much the same with me.

The majority of people i know do the same. They just play the usual games. I'm the one who usually has the "different" games but i was somehow able to pull it off though lol.

I guess its because i dont look like the typical gaming nerd nor do i act like one. The only time i ever really got shit was from playing Final Fantasy type games and that was from 1 of my specific friends LMAO.

like if somebody is clowning somebody for playing a specific type of game and i come up and nonchalantly say something like "..yea, i play that game" they will quickly stop only because i said that i played it lol

I also ran into an Xbox fanboy in the real(real life) one time and when he asked me which console i liked more out of PS3 and 360, I just nonchalanlty said "..ps3" and he just whipped into shape when i said it.

I usually get immediate respect from people on the gaming side in real life.

About the mith of PS1 and PS2

What a load of crap.  If the PSP and PS3 were not successful then almost none of MS's were and very few of nintendo's were...
