Forums - Gaming - Sony made gaming cool.

I see that a lot.  Sony and the PS1 are what expanded the gaming industry, made it something that was more than just for kids, released the mature games, etc.  I got a PS1 back in 1997 and enjoyed it.  It was a great console but really, what did Sony do?

Mature games?  Nothing new.  Mortal Kombat, Chiller, Shadowgate, etc. were available long before Sony entered the market.

Great IPs?  Final Fantasy, Metal Gear, Mega Man, Street Fighter etc. were already available elsewhere.

Sports games?  Madden, NHL, WWE, FIFA, MLB, etc. were staples of gaming since the 80's.

CD Roms?  Tons of consoles already released CD Rom games.

Even some of the bigger PS1 titles (Tomb Raider, Resident Evil) were available on Sega Saturn.  So, what was it about the PS1 that made the industry explode the way it did?  I experienced it and I still don't get it! Did everyone just fuck up so much that Sony won by default?  Were Sony such masters of gaming and marketing right out of the gate?  Enlighten me.

And yet, as cool as Sega was, they died.  What did Sony do that was so right?

I will agree. Based from my experiences at the time gaming was pretty much a kiddie environment (with consoles, not home computers). With Sega, Nintendo etc, adults usually bought consoles for their kids, even if they themselves wanted to play them.

I remember newspaper articles and other media sources commenting on how the PlayStation was the first console that many adults were actually buying for themselves without being embarrassed about it.

Before as I said many adults bought consoles to play with themselves but used their kids as cover. I can clearly remember the newspaper articles and the system being discussed on TV shows.

Playstation made gaming cool for adults.

they had other divisions which let them sink alot of money where as sega had no fall back hence why they died.

I thought about that, too.  I have nothing to back it up but I think that kids of the 80's that started gaming just became the adults of the 90's that continued gaming and introduced others to the hobby.  Maybe we just all came of age and the Playstation had the content/capabilities we were looking for.
