It can go either way depending what was involved on your life experiences. Right now gaming is so mainstream there isn't really any one company that sticks out at the moment as cool.

They had the cheaper system *and* they put a *lot* of money in advertising. They also managed to get some big IPs like Final Fantasy and brought it to a broader audience.

Predictions for Nintendo NX and Mobile

I have to agree. Gaming culture changed in my country because of the PS1. Games like Gran Turismo, Tomb Raider, Syphon Filter and MGS that were exclusive to the platform at the time come off as mature (note, while third party exclusives conribued, NOTHING did the job like Gran Turismo). Suddenly older guys were playing games again and people had their PS1's in their car attached to a TV (before the TV attachment was released). You would be called a nerd if you discussed gaming in certain places in public, but all sorts of dudes would discuss GT and it was (as you said) "cool". After that it became easier to accept gaming and the PS2 brought it to new heights (doubling as a DVD player and all).
Playstation = The Beast from the East

Sony + Nintendo = WIN! PS3 + PSV + PS4 + Wii U + 3DS
Yeah, that "Sony made gaming cool" line is a load of bull. There was nothing particularly special about the Playstation, it was just a situation of happenstance, that convened to give it a lot of the big, high selling games that generation.
But quite frankly, gaming was "cool" back in the early 80s days of arcades, as well as the Atari 2600. Gaming was "cool" with the Sega Master System and especially the NES. PS1 deserves props. But some people get a bit ridiculous about things.
idk
but i hate when people jump to the "Mortal Kombat" thing everytime. Sega is automatically an adult driven system now because MK has blood in it OMG
but seriously
I remember being a kid and having Sega and Nintendo. I can still remember the very 1st time i laid eyes on a playstation.
It was at my friends house and we were playing N64 in his room and the "grown ups" were all in the living room having a party while we were stuck in the room.
I came out, for some reason that i cant remember and i seen that they were playing PlayStation. I looked at the screen for a while and i seen him controlling a guy that was sneaking around and him getting shot in the arm(I later found out that the game was Metal Gear Solid). I looked on the table and seen a fighting game called " Tekken", "Twisted Metal" and a PizzaHut demo disc that they supposedly had just got from ordering the Pizza.
There were a couple beer bottles but nobody seemed to be drunk. Every body was just raving over what has happening over the screen as if they were watching a close football game.
I actually remember saying "This is what big people play?" with curiosity. I never got 1 until a couple years had passed.
I had another friend whos mom had a PlayStation and she was always playing Tomb Raider, Cyber Tiger and some fishing game.
I do remember the PS being attached to grown ups.
I dont remember actually "wanting" one at the time but i just looked at it as a "..so this is what big people play?" kinda thing
so i guess they did make gaming cool "in a way"

Sorry to break it to you nerds, but video gaming is not cool and has never been.
| RolStoppable said: History is written by the winners, that's what it comes down to. Those stories are then repeated over and over again until they become accepted as the truth. The biggest irony is that those people who praise the PS1 for making gaming fit for adults usually happened to be kids at the time. Sony happened to be at the right place at the right time, took advantage of Nintendo's and Sega's miscues, and topped it off by selling hardware at a loss and moneyhatting third parties. Two generations later another company would do major damage to Sony by using Sony's playbook. It's usually ignored that gaming news in the mainstream media was generally negative during the days of PlayStation dominance. You had games like Grand Theft Auto in the news and you can figure what that was about. Sony's marketing and gaming magazines/websites made it seem like gaming had been fully accepted by the mainstream, but if that had truly been the case, then video games wouldn't have been repeatedly used as scapegoats for school shootings and the like. The medium movies doesn't get that treatment, because the mainstream knows what it is about and thus any such news would be laughed at. But video games were still largely reported as being for kids, teenagers or young adults who hadn't reached proper adulthood yet. Grand Theft Auto and the like are not mature games. Let's look at a post with warped perception:
First, Sony's marketing has indeed done wonders. Second, Nintendo bundled Street Fighter II with the SNES and promoted it. It was one of the biggest games of its time. We can still see Nintendo promoting third party content today, like the global success of Level 5's Professor Layton series shows, as well as some other games like Monster Hunter. On top of that, Nintendo has often and regularly worked with third parties to bring games to America and/or Europe, the latest example being the upcoming Bravely Default, but it already started on the NES with titles like Dragon Quest. Third, is the perception of gaming really going to improve by adding non-gaming to video game systems? It's rather the opposite. Adding the ability to watch DVDs is more like confirming that gaming is still for children, as it is nothing more than an attempt to add something of value for the parents (or the wife). I don't think anybody ever watched a movie on their console and then thought that gaming has come a long way. Then again, the belief that gaming was seen as only for children is a myth built by the marketing teams of Nintendo's competitors. Whether it was Sega, Sony, Microsoft or someone else, the focus of their marketing was always that they are the console for grown-ups which is something that obviously resonates well with people who have yet to grow up. An actual adult wouldn't let any company dictate to them what is mature and what is not. |
@ Bolded
like me minus the praising part lol
I was a kid back then when ps1 came out but i damn sure liked playing games at an early age. I just remember seeing all the adults around me who played PS1

I think it depends on the person playing it
and also what that person does in their spare time.
