Forums - Gaming - Sony made gaming cool.

The biggest mistake each and every one of you are making with this thread:

Looking for one reason/answer, and assuming Sony would've been pringles without it.

I do not now as as kid I played only Nintendo, but as an adult I moved on to Xbox and Sony. Who cares though really it is pretty petty arguement.

What a load of crap.  If the PSP and PS3 were not successful then almost none of MS's were and very few of nintendo's were...

The PSP and the PS3 weren't what you'd exactly call "successful". Microsoft has yet to make a console that dominates and nintendo is known for floundering on the console space. Very few consoles become a market leader and that's what he'd call successful. Another thing that irked me about him was how he thought the N64 was competitive with the PS1 in north america when in reality it wasn't even a match with the PS1 having a 2:1 ratio.

I usually agree with malstrom's assessment of each console manufacturer's business but that post had some pretty strange reasons as to why those consoles were successful. His first reason was about macroeconomic conditions being better which I do agree with partly but that alone cannot make consoles win like the failures known as sega saturn and N64. Another thing I disagree with is playstation not expanding gaming "socially". I guess time flies by really quickly for him to forget that it PS1 games were cheaper to produce than N64 games. Playstation expanded the gaming audience tremendously with CDs and gaming altogether became more accessible because of it. It doesn't matter who had the CD drives first in their consoles. What mattered most was using it as an advantage and sony won in that department.

Id say that's true. They picked up the slack that Nintendo left off. Granted 3rd parties played a HUGE role in PS1/PS2 gens, but hey, give credit to where its due.

Xbox: Best hardware, Game Pass best value, best BC, more 1st party genres and multiplayer titles.

Sony turned gaming into a hobby for adults as well instead of something just for kids or weirdos playing in the arcades.

Yeah, speaking of myths, notice the way he's acting as if Nintendo had complications releasing the NES in Europe, it was retailed here for 8 years, and did averagely since they didn't have a bunch of 3rd parties here to round up all to themselves. Even the Sega Master System sold more units.

Seriously, who IS this Malstrom guy? What ditch did he emerge from and become this credible, widely hailed source? I'd like to think I've followed a lot of independant journalists in my lifetime and I'd never heard of this overly-entitled, cyncical shmuck until a few weeks ago.

I can't take an article that says that the PS3 or PSP did not sell well seriously. The PS3 outsold every other Nintendo system prior to the Wii (which it will outsell in time as well).

Nintendo made gaming cool when Metroid was released.

Tell that to my mother. She loved my Nintendo and hated my Playstation.
