Forums - Sony - Kotaku: Mark Cerny Explains How Mandatory Game Installations Will Work On PS4

You're kidding, right? Most Nintendo games would fit on a DVD. Some third party games are bigger, like the example I gave, Lego City Undercover. And guess what? The loading times in that game are very long. But that's just one part of the problem.  With the ever increasing data transfer rate of GPUs, the optical drive transfer rates have become a bottleneck. Installing content is a workaround to this limitation. Believe in your conspiracy theory as much as you want. That won't change the facts.

CODGHOSTS on all three next-gen are very comparable. Only a tiny difference in cutscenes. I'm sure watchdogs and ac4 are the same. LEGO City is likely due to it being a new game on a new system... not disc read issues.

Plus, a minor install of a GB or something to help with critical data is not the same thing as full game / digital equivalency.

You will not have minor installs on 4BONE. Reading from a disc and the HD is great and was used a lot this gen, but it caused the digital versions to suffer.

Both MS and Sony are having disc based games played off the HD so that digital and disc versions have identical performance.

And just like that, gone are the waiting days for installs to finish, althoug Kojima tried to make it bearable with MGS4, i'd much rather have this option ;)

I loved the Heavy Rain install.

I find it amazing how many people are happy or don't seem to care that basically every game REQUIRES 30 GB installs.

I don't give a shit if they are installing while I'm playing and can start playing instantly or 5 hours later. The fact is I'm REQUIRED to install like 1/10 of my storage space for a PHYSICAL COPY of the game to play. That just seems rediculous.

I could have sworn there was bitching last gen with like 4-5 gig installs. How the hell is it now good news for a 30 GB install?

Game installs do not auto-delete on the PS3. You have to go into the Game Data and delete it.

it'll outsell the Wii U in a couple of days.. maybe even 2 days

mM

Games install because it can read from the disc and HDD and the same time. This will help with not just load times, but the overall performance of the game too. Pop in would be reduced and frame rate improved. Again, not a big deal, who even plays 10+ games at once? Even if you do, reinstalling is pretty immediate (Way more so than 7th Gen). I Just hope DLC and installs are kept separate.

The complaints were from waiting for the installs, not directly the size of them. Since these take hardly any time to install, you can just deleate them after every play session. 50GB are needed to be left free for installs if you do this, regaardless of how many games you have.

What does that have to do with the topic?

Installing a Hard drive is not mandatory! LOL
