I'm running a bit behind.

Hint for #36: The third proper entry in a popular series (not counting spinoffs or anything like that), it is often seen as a low point in the franchise, despite many additions, innovations, and refinements.

Grandia 3?

Front Mission 3?

Shadow Hearts....the 3rd one which is all bright and happy@

No, mine is somewhat more mainstream than any of those.

Second hint: it's a JRPG.

Pokemon Ruby and Sapphire?

Oooo, that might be it. I can't believe I forgot about Pokemon when referring to mainstream JRPG's!

However.....I would say Diamond/Pearl marks the lowpoint for the series. Kyogre and Gruddon are at least pretty awesome NOT DRAGON legendaries.

My #35 is known as one of the first games to have "on the fly" - (pun intended) multiplayer joining where players didn't have queue before launching the game. It is also known for making full 3D software rendering popular and being able to utilize early 3D graphics accelerators. It was an odd but well received mix of horror and sci-fi gameplay. Mostly sci-fi. It also was an early adopter of dynamic lighting allowing rooms to be darkened by lights being shot out and flares getting launched.  It is widely considered better all around than its original predecessor.

Mmmm.

Sounds like Quake II or something, though I'm not sure where 'on the fly' comes in...

Negative. similar time era though.  Quake 1 (which is way higher on my list) is immensely better than Quake 2, IMO.

Can't be XenoSaga Ep 3 because that's the best episode....Can't be Persona, SMT, or Star Ocean 3 for the same reasons.

Do people really regard Star Ocean 3 as the best episode?

I thought it was horrible compared to 1 & 2.  Haven't played 4 which I am led to believe is worse, but still.

Yep, the description fits for both. In God of War 3, the chance for a sequel is killed because all of the Major Gods are dead. In Gears of War 3, a chance for a sequel is killed because the Lambant, and the Locust, are killed off by a virus which breaks down the DNA structure in these species and very effectively and quickly killed off every single Locust/Lambent, including their Queen. So unless the COG go underground and try to kill off the pockets of Locust which weren't exposed to the atmosphere, there really isn't room for a sequel.

Anyway, I'm still behind

#45 - An underappreciated fighter published by Sony. This game is super fun because you can impale people with stuff you break.

#44 - One of the most expensive games on eBay, more expensive then Earthbound. It's similar to MegaMan

#40 - A spiritual successor to one of Squaresofts best games. The developer is not Square, and this franchise still see's a new entry every few years.

#39 - This game never localized, despite strong sales from this newly localized franchise. Because of this, the next game in the series is often given credit for introducing new features (like creating a character after yourself) despite this game being the one to do so.

#38 - One of the only games where they managed to make a proper 4th installment on a trilogy that ended very conclusively. I.i. it's the 4th game in a trilogy

#37 - This game received some praise for mocking other well established franchises but critisizm for a lack of originality. Had a very challenging post game challenge mode, which took me 2 days to finish, but it was damn satisfying. IMO this game defines fast paced action games.

#36 - One of the major characters in this game, was not seen in a sequel, but might be re-introduced in the next game in the series. This game is often considered the best in the franchise by most of the hardcore fans.

#35 Was an exclusive, then it was no longer exclusive, but then a special edition made this an exclusive again. A terrible design choice in the sequel killed all hype for this franchise.

A lot of hints, good luck!

45. Battle Arena Toshinden?

44. Super Mario Bros? (the original NES cart I'm guessing)

40. Xenoblade?

38. Escape from Monkey Island?

Nope, you guys are a couple years too late.  The "on the fly" portion is heavily involved.

38. Tekken 3 (PS1)

This game perfected the fighing mechanics in Tekken 1 & 2 by adding depth... literally! The mechanics didn't change a whole lot in the next few titles. All the Tekken games since have replicated the mechanics of Tekken 3 adding small evolutions to an already brilliant game.

37. Bomb Jack (Amstrad CPC 464, also in Arcade, also on Commodore 64/16, Atari ST, Amiga, Game Boy and now on Wii Virtual Console)

This is the only video game my mother has ever played. Younger posters are probably thinking 'WTF?' but this game is pure platforming brilliance. Someone has planted 24 bombs in 5 high profile locations and it's up to Bomb Jack (with his impressive jumping and gliding ability) to collect and defuse them. Collect the bombs in the right order (denoted by the order the bombs sparkle) and get a massive bonus. But watch out for those fast moving robots! Now on Wii's Virtual Console if anyone wants to give it a go.
