Decline? They just released Perfect Dark not long before that lol. Nintendo didn't buy them because the price was just too high for them.

Perfect Dark didn't sell anywhere close to Goldeneye. Banjo Tooie didn't sell great either, the same goes for everything else they released in their last couple of years with Nintendo. Rare's games sold less while their development times and costs increased. That is a decline and there's no way anyone can argue otherwise.

I didn't know you meant sales. I thought you meant quality.

nintendo should get banjo back and put in smash! they can do that... right? They took DK! I think it is not impossible

DK was never Rare's.

My bad! I forgot. But nintendo can do that. Activision got Crash, nintendo can do the same with banjo, am I right?

They have to buy them from MS.

Aand Phil Spencer is not dumb, MS needs platformers like Banjo and it's a well known franchise.

Why didn't Nintendo buy them?

because Microsoft did first, for $375 mil

No, Nintendo had certainly the option to buy Rare, it was just too high of a price for a developer that was already on the decline. Rare wanted to sell and Microsoft were the ones who were willing to pay.

Yes, decline. They also released Star Fox Adventures just before that..

Star Fox Adventures....

Star.. Fo..*sideshowbobrake.gif*

Anyway, I think it's fair to say that everyone had blood on their hands concerning Rare's fall from grace. Even Nintendo. Something was clearly wrong when a single 2nd party studio is give or take putting out more games than Nintendo's entire internal division.

Just looked up Tossel. Apparently he joined Rare at the tail end of Diddy Kong Racing and left after the completion of Kinect Sports. Just in case people are wondering.

I have no doubt Microsoft mismanagement helped contribute to the decline of Rare, but I think it's unfair to place the blame solely on the technology giant. I think it was a combination of several things, including mismanagement, the dissolution of the partnership with Nintendo, and the loss of creative talent after the acquisition by Microsoft.

Some of those developers left Rare before MS bought them. It is well known that Rare was extremely demanding with their employees, and some of them left because they were tired of the excessive work.

That's a fair point. I didn't mean to imply that everyone jumped ship because of Microsoft. Rare in 2002 wasn't the Rare of 1994-2001.

I don't understand? Nintendo has blood on its hands because Rare turned out so many great games during the 5th gen?

No I mean, because they were exhausted as a result, I don't think it was a coincidence that a lot of key personnel left from 2000 onwards.

And if you really wanna be thrown for a loop, Star Fox Adentures wasn't going to be a Star Fox game at all before Nintendo stuck their noses in.

I keep wondering why people say that microsoft killed rare when rare themselves are the sinking ship!

Nintendo just didn't believe in them that's why.

Didn't Nintendo "SELL" hence MS getting them?

Either way, it wasn't Rare, it was Ultimate Play the Game who I mourne :P
