was knows since they changed their politics. how else should the console know that it doesn't need a 24 hour check anymore if you don't tell this the console per patch? but i bet some people on this neogaf everyone is always talking about complain hard about this now even if the were the guys who complained about the 24h check and should be happy about the change.

everyone knew that there was going to be a patch, we just didn't know that you would have to install it to do anything with the console...

Let's move on people...

All computers, smart phones, and consoles require patching to be on the Internet and to fix bugs.

The operating system of the PS4 and X1 consoles probably have over 50,000,000 lines of code. For people to believe that would ship bug free on day one is unrealistic.

Games probably have 10's of millions of lines of code... Again, for people to think they would be completely bug free is unrealistic.

Also, be prepared for frequent updates of both consoles in the first few months... New hardware, new operating systems, and new online patterns will not be smooth for either vendor.

Do I think everything should be perfect as a consumer... Yes... Is it realistic to expect everything will be perfect? No...

i understand what you mean, but, without the Xbox one update, you can't do anything.

Also, smartphones and computers aren't entirely applicable; i don't know about you, but my smartphone is always connected to the internet, and for the most part, it's the same with my computer. My consoles on the other hand, are not always connected to internet, and what about the people that don't have access to good internet?

Again, i do understand the need for a day one update, it just seems troublesome that you can't do anything without it. One more thing that i don't understand, is that if the ps4 had drm, but the patch takes it away, but you can still play games without installing the update, why can't you play games on the Xbox one without installing the update?

MS is in the position where they did a complete 180 on what was built into the firmware from the start.  Although I completely agree that the electronic should work when I buy it, I also understand the technical implication of why this can't happen in this case.  I am positive that MS did not want to ship a product that could not work without a patch, but, I bought one of the first Android phones and they often had the same issue, and have even bought a few computers where without a day one patch they were always crashing.  Although this is not normal in the console business, it is at least an acceptable exception in phones and computers.

There are a lot of coordinated events and logistics to shipping a product, chip production, motherboard production, etc.  The firmware on the shipping X1's is probably way back from early July which is about when they announced the change.  To strip all the DRM stuff out and fully test the 50 million lines of code was simply unfeasible unless they delayed the console.  I for one would prefer to do the "must have" day one update on November 22 rather than wait a few months for the new console.

yes? i knew it since they changed their politics. like i said, how shall the console work without patch if the console believes it only works with connection? when they changed their politics of the needed 24 hour connection, playing used games and stuff like that,  they obviously still had to rewrite a lot of the code so that the consoles they started to produce can't already have the new code. the day one patch will tell the console "you can play used games, you don't have to connect every 24 hours" and so on...

so, it was pretty obvious that you can't play games without a patch and i'm sure that we had these discussions months ago. and that you have to download the apps which they only finished the last weeks is also obvious. so, without playing games and using apps, how shall the console work for something?

it's not as if i would like this but for me it was always clear that you have to patch the console so that you can really do somethig with it.

Thre remnants of the DRM policy...

This, I stole from grandpa...It's called soap.

The PS4 will also have a massive day one update so I don't really seen what is the problem here. Also I highly doubt you have crappy internet if you are able to spend $500+ on a console at launch.

i agree, but i think they should put the update on a cd and ship it with the consoles. I'm not going to lie and say that i know stuff about computers, cause i don't shit lol, but it seems like an oversight on there part, to reverse the drm policies months ago, and to still be required to have such an invasive update on day one that, basically frees the system. I get what you mean , but the ps4 had similiar policies in place, and it can play games on day one without the update; do you have an idea as to why the ps4 can play games and the xbox one can't?

we always knew that there was going to be a patch, but it was never confirmed that you would have to install it to play games (i might be wrong on this point, and if so, please provide a link)

on the PS4 you can play single player games while the system downloads the much smaller update in the background.

this is what annoys me about the update on the Xbone, you can't do anything without it.

Hold your horses until you know the size of both updates you can't claim that the one for the PS4 is much smaller.
