Man..you are missing out on some fantastic games like Pikmin 3, Wonderful 101, zombi U, Windwaker,Upcoming Mario etc. Makes me question why you bought a Wii U in the first place if those games havent tickled your fancy.

Lol, so many apologists in this thread.
I love MGS throughout the series, for over a decade right back on the PS1, but even I have to admit, the lack of trophies in MGS4 for over 4 years did become a bit of a turn off eventually.
I'll even say that I might even feel more inclined to play Valkyria Chronicles and R&C: Tools of Destruction if they got trophy patches.
EDIT: I should probably add that it wouldn't be a deal breaker behind whether or not I buy a system though, there's a lot of things much higher on my list that make me uncertain about getting a Wii U for now.

Well, we are always judged for our preferences. Even in gaming:
"You like THIS game? It looks so bad, it has last gen graphics!"
"You like THIS game? This has no mature content in it and is rated for everyone."
"You like THIS game? It is only a fragfest without any lasting gameplay."
"You like THIS game? It has anime graphics, so it is only for children."
"You like THIS game? It has no anime graphics, only boring brown and grey."
"You like THIS game? Nobody dies in the course of the story, so it is boring."
"You like THIS game? It has no story, only a test of skill, so it is boring."
OK, I think you get it.
| Korppi said: I think achievements can actually be a nice addition to a game when they're designed to encourage the player to try out alternative playstyles and enjoy the game in a way they might not have thought of. Like getting through a specific section without being detected by an enemy, fighting a certain boss using without using (or by using nothing but) a specific weapon/item/gadget, et cetera. It can be a way for the developer to tell you "Hey, man, play like you wanna play, but you can also do it like this if you want to. Just saying", which is something I much prefer to getting smacked in the face with a tutorial that shows us just how we're supposed to enjoy the game, or having my options limited by a compulsory stealth section or randomly getting my equipment snatched away. Those kinds of achievements are great. And of course, about as common as polio. Most achievements are either ineluctable, which you get merely by progressing in the game ("You started the game!" "You beat the first boss!" "You beat the second boss!"), a way to add a side objective of sorts in hopes of getting the player to play (just one with no in-game rewards at all), or just an additional "bling!" that accompanies the completion of an actual in-game side mission, presumably added because the developer could not come up with an in-game reward to make it ultimately feel worthwhile and/or because actually doing the side quest was just not fun enough. Those kinds of achievements are nothing but irritating to those of us who are not into the whole, uuuhh... metagame of comparing and showing off your achievements, don't really offer any motivation, and I feel like their presence sometimes even deprives the game I'm playing of its full value, as things that would've been integrated directly into the game in the past have been replaced by a cheap pop-up. |
Well, that's an analysis I can agree with. I also like achievements, if they push me to play the game differently. Achievements that try your skill (try to reach X points in a specific level) are already critical. It can be fun to try to get them, but it can also turn out to be frustrating and make you feel worse about the game. Achievements that come automatic on playthrough (beaten Level X) or are making you doing something useless (shooting a trashcan) are worthless.
Well, I really liked achievements the first years but after a while I stopped caring for them except for games which I really care about (Halo 4 as example). I still look at the list before I start a game so that i see if there is stuff i can easily do but i would never watch videos or something like that to see how to get an achievement . I would also never boost them with others.
But if you don't play a game because it doesn't have achievements/trophies I wonder if you even care about the games? I mean, you wouldn't have fun to play the games without trophies? I understand if you have more fun with them but that doesn't mean that games like The Last of Us are only fun because of the trophies.
If game developers will read this thread they will cry. The message is pretty much "Your games aren't enough fun for me if they don't have trophies"
I only get trophies for my absolute favorite games and only when the trophies are actually manageable for me to acquire.
I'll also get a platinum if it's easy to do on a game I'm already playingthrough, like God of War, but not going to play games I have no interest in just to get the trophies, even if they are easy to acquire.

lol
It's true most of my XBL friends list cares about achievements.
Wait, is the OP saying he's not playing the Wii U anymore or is it the article? Cause I'll buy the Wii U off the OP for like 150 if he doesn't want it!

I´m legitimately sorry for you.
You aren´t supposed to play a game to get an artificial reward (those trophies/points do nothing, you can only show them as a substitute for ....let´s just call it eSchlong)
Trophies can be a nice way to see everything a developer wants you to see.
Playing games or rather not buying any games because the game doesn´t pat you on the back and says " You ARE A GOOD BOY!"...is pretty much against the reason video games exist.
Do you like watching films or reading books? Does it bother you that there aren´t any flashing signs that say "Page 21...done !" and "reward" you with 10 thingamajigs for your bookworm account to show of ?
