I could see him "retiring" for one or (max) two years to take care of his health problems. But people like him can't retire forever. Not because we don't want to, but because it's what motivates them, what their body and mind demand them to do.
Because of that, I'd say to him "take your time, get well and enjoy life ... that way when you come back you'll be in full force."
