Basicly the old X-men from the first 3 movies are sending Wolverine back in Time to the X-men from the First Class movie..

why is that?

Curious how X-Men has taken this route. First two films did well, then third and spin off faltered. Then the under dog reboot of sorts did so well and now trying to tie it all together.

I will say this may end up being one of the more distinct super hero films in story and its arc.

The third movie was the highest grossing X-Men movie.

True. Yet, Fox saw the critical and fan recption and did not pursue X4, instead opting to do a Wolverine spin off and a semi-reboot or prequel X-Men.  I think if they were confident in the direction 3 took the series they would not have hesitated in cranking out a 4th or 5th one.  Why I say faltered instead of "bombed" as they weren't money losers for the franchise, but did shake confidence in its sustanibility. First class was largely made as stop gap measure to keep legal rights and brand alive.  It was well recieved so now we have this attempt to fit it all together.

I am very curious how this one turns out.

It's a war. In war, both sides are selfish. If someone decides not to be selfish in a war, they become dead.

But you are human! You should be cheering for our team! not those mutants! We were winning!

That sure is a revisionist way of looking at things.  I recall it very differently.  The cast was getting expensive so X3 was supposed to be the last core X-Men movie and they were going to do spinoffs after that, with Wolverine and Magneto being the first.  Wolverine happened and Magneto ended up expanding into First Class.  Since none have been as profitable as X3 (and the original cast not commanding the salaries they did back then), we have an attempt to rekindle that old fire and mix it with the new all stitched together by an homage to a classic popular X-Men story.

You have a fair point.  The cost of the cast would not have been the concern at the time if they were confident that an X4 could still make the money needed though.  I mean, they made a Pirates 4 and had to pay Depp an absolute fortune to play Sparrow.

I can swear I remember though that First Class was Fox and Amaiing Spider-Man by Sony were in part to keep the rights as if they go too long without using them they forfeit back to Marvel.

I do wonder what Future Past production budget will be as confess not really aware what the cast members command salary wise. It seems like a bit of a gamble with all the names in it.

@augen, actually they paid depp, i believe 20 million to do a pirates 4. if u check around u will see disney greenlite a 4th pirates movie with a 150 million budget the moment depp told ppl if i remember correctly at comic-con that he wanted to play captain jack again. there wasnt even a script to a 4th movie, when he said that.
on-topic, i will see this x-men movie, because of the original cast back for the most part. i hated the prequel , thought it was utter crap. And the the reason they are sending wolverine back to the past and not another x-men, is because wolverine is and always has been the most popular x-men. I for one loved the 2 wolverine movies and with : the wolverine now the 2nd highest grossing x-men style movie, i know a 3rd wolverine will be made, makes me happy.

You thought First class (87% on the tomato meter) was crap and loved Origins: Wolverine (38%)?

We are now enemies sir. Watch your back.
