The third movie was the highest grossing X-Men movie.

True. Yet, Fox saw the critical and fan recption and did not pursue X4, instead opting to do a Wolverine spin off and a semi-reboot or prequel X-Men.  I think if they were confident in the direction 3 took the series they would not have hesitated in cranking out a 4th or 5th one.  Why I say faltered instead of "bombed" as they weren't money losers for the franchise, but did shake confidence in its sustanibility. First class was largely made as stop gap measure to keep legal rights and brand alive.  It was well recieved so now we have this attempt to fit it all together.

I am very curious how this one turns out.

That sure is a revisionist way of looking at things.  I recall it very differently.  The cast was getting expensive so X3 was supposed to be the last core X-Men movie and they were going to do spinoffs after that, with Wolverine and Magneto being the first.  Wolverine happened and Magneto ended up expanding into First Class.  Since none have been as profitable as X3 (and the original cast not commanding the salaries they did back then), we have an attempt to rekindle that old fire and mix it with the new all stitched together by an homage to a classic popular X-Men story.
