Forums - Sony - I Believe the PS4 Price in Brazil is Just Marketing (Bad and Disrespectful) - Sony Maths Out

My maths are right... only the ICMS was wrong.

But they are putting two times the IPI into PS4? WTF?

Shouldn't there be a state where ICMS-ST is NOT applied to? What if Sony flew in their stock from Chile (or even better some tax-haven island in the Carribean) to the various states? How does MS get away with half the price? So many questions....

And three times the ICMS, plus ICMS-ST. I'm 110% sure this would not apply to any case whatsoever on real life.

By Sony's logic, a top of the line MacBook retailing at Americanas for R$12,800 would cost in reality R$25,000.

Boy, Apple must be really kind to absorb losses of USD 6,000 per notebook sold haha.

I'm telling you this is passível de ação do minstério público for blatant lies and misinformation. For real. Sony Brazil really screwed things up this time around.

Edit - I've just studied a bit of legislation discovered it's doable for you to sort of cheat and consider the console an add-on to controllers/games and even miss the 50% IPI and have 40% charged instead for the whole package. So I guess the ammount of taxes should be even lower, for MS is surely doing it.

The left table is very badly structured but the calculations are all correct (I haven't checked if the order of taxes is correct by I assume it is). The final price assumes that the boxes are shifted interstate once. The only way to reduce the price is for Sony to open a shop at the harbour and sell PS4s there. There is no way MS can sell at their price without massive losses, if they also import the whole thing. Maybe they found a loophole and import the boxes in parts and make a few screws nd assemble the stuff in Brazil...

That what both do with PS3 and 360... PS4 and Xbone are imported.

Nope. You have no idea what is going on. The problem isn't the numbers. No one here thinks they are retarded enough to miscalculate them. For instance ICMS is a notoriously a non-cumulative tax and instead is charged four times in the table. Same for IPI - the federal government can charge it during three specific ocasions, the only one of which applies to the PS4 is customs clearance. If MS asssembled the X1 here they would have to pay it all the same, because it's output of an industrial plant, another situation where the tax is charged.

And I can give you a hundred examples of direct imports of closed boxes who come nowhere as close to the value Sony is charging, even accounting for IPI differences... that is, unless you want to believe, as I mentioned before, Apple is enduring USD 4000-6000 losses on their MacBooks, ditto for Microsoft and their products.

Somebory shared that on twitter.

And for Xbone.

Nonsense. Again, the left table is badly structured, that is all. Cost of goods landed = Transfer price + II, as it should be. That is all there is to note. Do not add anything that is also in the first few lines of the left table. Do  I really have to explain to you how to read a table line by line?

Again, here is the kicker: If Sony put a transfer price of $200 into the first line, the whole thing would drastically look better. Like in the case for XBox One. This gives you a rough idea on just how much MS is willing to loose in Brazil.

Why they will put a transfer price of $200? They can't do that... they can?

As long as the Government doesn't sue them for intentionally undervaluing goods (if they even have such laws, and can actually prove it that whatever $value they try is severe undervaluing), they can do that easily. And it is MS of all companies, there aren't too many Governments that dare go against MS. The EU every 10-20 years or so sues MS and gets a few hundred millions in damages. MS laughs, pays and continues the same way..

What is the tax rate for web cameras in Brazil? I'm pretty sure MS imports the XBox without Kinect2, and the Kinect2 as a simple webcam (and the box as a pc?)
