Most of the shooter I played last gen on the PS3 had dedicated servers, Warhawk, Resistance 1 and 2, Killzone 2 and 3, MAG.... I really do not see how this gives xbox live an advantage... It doesn't...

You know those are all frist party games you mention right?  What about all those 3rd party developers and publishers out there.

Yeah, my point is that its nothing new....  Microsoft is bragging about something that Sony gave us even when  the PSN was free. COD is finally offering dedicated servers, though it should of happened long ago with all of the money that game brings in. And I think all platforms will have these dedicated servers for Ghost. I really don't care who pays for them, just glad that we are getting them.

No you are not getting it.  Sony only provided that for their games.  MS is giving ALL developers on their console dedicated servers.  The scope of this is not even close to what you are talking about. You are talking about a few games and MS is offering hundreds of games the ability to use dedicated servers on their system. If we take a look at the top MP exclusive game that is coming out for the PS4 which is Killzone, it does not support dedicated servers for gameplay events.

This is totally different.

This is essentially "money hatting", as the people on gaming sites like to use the term, every third party developer in the world to make games on their system.

If a third party developer makes a multiplayer game they get to have FREE servers on the xbox one, meanwhile they have to PAY for whatever they do on the PS4.  This could lead to worse online on PS4 games or even exclusivity for One.

The reason respawn probably said more affordable is probably because ms gave them discounts on the servers for the other platforms the game is coming on since I don't think this applies to PC games

Free dedicated servers for all is really good news. What is Sony offering to counter that? Lower royalties?

It's just that simple.

Of course its good news.

Its a smart move. But I dont know how much effect it will have on gamers and whether it will persuade them to get an X1 instead of PS4. Most people still wont know what dedicated servers are and arent likely to make a decision based on. Still it gives MS and the X1 a positive vibe and goodwill from devs and that alone may be worth the cost ( especially if they manage to put other positive features in place (family sharing).

Which goes against what devs have said...

"Most importantly to us, Microsoft priced it so that it's far more affordable than other hosting options"

Nobody calls free 'more affordable'.

I'm sure will be some kind of indirect 'price' for this though, like need do something exclusive, be it timed release, DLC, whatever.

That's from June.  The OP is more up-to-date.

I thought Xbox Live on the 360 was supposed to be so much better than PSN because they were running off Microsoft's servers? Yet most games that ran base because of poor netcode on the PS3 ran bad because of poor netcode on the 360. Tekken 6, Mortal Kombat, etc. There are games that ran worse on the XBL but you don't see fans bringing those games up. Persona 4 Arena is one of those games. It has issues with its netcode where there is lag that's not there on the PS3 version.

I hear people saying that the online is going to be better because there are 300,000 power of the cloud servers, but I guarantee those same people are going to brush it off when you show them a quote from a developer who states the online on the Xbox One version isn't as good because worse netcode, kind of like this below. If you don't like the link, Google "Persona 4 Arena lag." Don't even bother with the system name and you'll still see nothing but the the 360 being mentioned, not to mention the devs even said it's only with the 360.

I know the 360 didn't have servers for all their games, but this is what fans constantly stated.  Thatwhat you were paying the $50 a year was for dedicated servers, as Microsoft's PR made it sound like that.

Sorry to spoil the excitement, but this is apparently just typical PR:
Fooling the audience with well-chosen information that is strictly speaking correct, yet completely misleading.

It probably just means that for a limited time, game developers will not have to pay for setting up dedicated servers alone. It does NOT mean that running these dedicated servers will be free for the developers, no matter how much cloud resources that would use. They could simply charge for things like bandwidth etc., and for the developers it doesn't really matter if they're paying 100k for cloud bandwidth or the same amount for setting up and running their own servers.

So unless we know all the details about Microsoft pricing game developers, there's just not way of saying how good this actually is for developers and customers. I assume that they will indeed try to bait them with relatively small prices though. But they will not charge them absolutely nothing, no matter how much resources they'll use.

It's the same stupid PR as with those ridiculous "Xbox One can/can't do 1080p gaming" statements: Of course the Xbone can do 1080p gaming, even the 360 was already perfectly capable of that. But that's just not what people actually mean when they discuss that question.
