If only there were a hardware manufacturer that didn't develop very powerful hardware, instead investing in, say, a new input system to broaden the possibilities without adding much of a burden.

"new input system"? Are you talking about the WiiU tablet controller... a rehash of the 9 year old Nintendo DS concept, only with bigger screens?

2. Yes, but what's wrong with it being borrowed from the handhled market? Especially since no comprable gaming console used the idea in the eight year period between the DS and Wii U launches.

There is nothing wrong with the controller of the WiiU. But Nintendo fans are wondering, why the "new input system"-formula doesn't work this time to generate a great demand.

But most people don't see the big innovation anymore in using a touchscreen or combining a controller with a touchscreen or adding a second screen. It all has been done before. Touchscreens are everywhere and even using several screens becomes normality... and if you want it or not: tablets and smartphones do "count" in the perception of the masses.

This is how industries are destroyed.

They are doing nothing to prevent the inevitable.

And Nintendo will be like:

"Aww shit guys, not again T_T"

In fairness, Nintendo's hardly been much of a solution this gen. They've only offered to maintain the status quo, the same status quo they rightfully slammed only a few years back.

Heck, Nintendo is the company that lost most of its third-party support because it was strangling the ability of everyone else to make a profit.

There also seems to be this idea that we should be comparing everything to what Guerrilla is doing, which is just not the case. Very few developers are going to push the hardware as much as they will. I mean, Namco in the poll, seriously? A lot of developers, especially Japanese developers, aren't going to significantly increase their budgets for next gen. Capcom has already declared that they would not. Most games on the PS3 didn't push the hardware and the same will be true for the PS4.

EA has said that it will depend on the title but that they're looking at a 10-20% increase in costs. At the same time, however, they also said that they're looking to make more money per game sold than last gen.

i thought the Wii and DS were responsible for 99% of industry growth at some point? (i thin k 2009).

Gaming is DOOOOMED!

Seriously, not all games have to be OMFG-realistic. More power = more options. it doesn't mean all said options must be used.

Lastly, why is it that simple PC modders can always seem to get a game looking even better without much manpower?

Why Nintendo has the right concept. Create a system which allows high end games but reduced cost to encourage development from cash strapped companies or indies. I feel like I was the only person who felt completely ok with this last gen in terms of graphics and physics. The Wii U raises the bar but keeps the cost down.

Yes, but that was last generation. I am fully on board with what Nintendo said last generation. This generation is a different story.

well it's too early to come to conclusions like that, the generation barely started XD

Exactly how does Wii U keep the costs down??? By not requiring as many resources to max it out? Who says you have to max out a system's capability? PS4 and 360 have indie games that cost barely anything as well. If I'm not mistaken, sony and M$ have been pushing those a lot too. Resource use is up to the developer. Power just removes restrictions.

It's up to said developer to use as much as they're comfortable with. PCs have been very powerful for years, yet not many games tried to be crysis 1 for good reason. If the industry died, it will be because of mismanagement not because consoles got a boost in power. Spending outside your means has always been a staple of poor financial decisions. To suggest otherwise is kind of ridiculous.

We might actually see a return of mid level games if devs are smart this is true .

I sincerely doubt it. I suspect the mid-level game will become even more rare this generation, and will not see a return until and unless the newer crop of smaller developers grow large enough to bloom into that arena.
