sounds good for an industry already on the brink of collapse lol.

I'm totally ok with the last of us level of graphics though, no need to push it that much further.

Just push creativity, please.

That's what I am thinking. The new hardware in Xbox One and PS4 does not REQUIRE 4x the development effort, resources, and costs! The developers are simply choosing to invest that much, and I still find that figure startling. It has to be way off or overly exaggerated.

I mean, take your current Xbox 360 and PS3 games, give them full 1080p/60fps native, add better AA, and then give your artists ability to boost textures and things a bit where it makes sense. As shown in games like Uncharted and Last of Us, the artists can make games look way better than the hardware would seem capable of. To me, it does not seem like it would take that much to make a new game.

But, if you are trying to fully max out the system, at launch, then I could see the quadruple figure being accurate, although unnecessary. Make your games creative, enjoyable, and stylish! Not pixel pushers' wet dreams!

I finished to read all the VG247 interview.

The best quote.

“We really pushed them to make better triggers that go up. Also stuff like the touch-pad. When I first saw it on the prototype controller I was like, ‘What the hell am I supposed to do with that? It’s not an iPhone game.’ But I’m really surprised as to how well that little thing works. I’m not promoting it, I don’t have to sell that controller, but I’m really happy with how it works in our game. Everything else works now, from response time, the dead-zones, everything is better. The lag is gone, and that makes Killzone a better game.”

I never had any complain with the input lag but I know it existed in Killzone 2 for example... so that is great news.

I expect to read more of these comments in the next months. Several publishers have denied a significant increase in development costs for the next generation in the recent past, but the truth is going to come out eventually.

Will be interesting to see what additional payment methods third parties come up with in order to stay afloat.

The truth is already out. EA and Activision as well as other big publishers has let the cat out of the bag. I bet third parties that are producing AA and A games are going to die off early in the next generation.

4x no effort put into creating games (mostly for third parties) is still 0 effort.

Yea doesn't sound too encouraging. Next gen will be even less creative and bland than last gen was (RPG-wise) at least.

don't worry, nintendo is always there to make games like they should be.

1) Actually, though I get the feeling a lot of people don't want to hear this, this should be, for many developers, one of the least expensive jumps ever in terms of percentage budget increase.  It certainly won't rival the jump to last gen.

2) At the same time, digital distribution continues to rise, which results in more money per unit sold going to the people who made the game.

1) At best the development budgets will stay the same. If developers are having problems getting profits now, I don't see how that will change this coming gen.

2) As far as I know you have to pay Steam (just an example), to put the game in there. Is the same as paying the retailer, it might be cheaper but that's about it.

a publisher has to pay a retailers for physicial copies and steam/psn/xbl for digital true. but when it comes to physicial they also need to pay shipping and manufacturing as well. all in all for a 3rd party publisher a retail copy earns around 27$ for the publisher. a digital copy earns 42$ since steam/psn take 30% and they have no other costs. so the digital copy is around 50% more profitable. when it comes to first party (just add platform royalties and online store cuts to profits) a retail copy would profit around 34$ but online it would earn them the full 60$. there is a reason why sony, ms and nintendo are pushing so hard for digital sales.

its pretty much well known that the cut for PSN/xbl/steam/app store/googleplay is 30%. thats pretty much the standard

Dont worry. Japanese 3rd parties will just follow in Capcoms footsteps and release all their biggest titles on 3DS so they can finance their PS4/XO titles:)
