Forums - Nintendo - Miyamoto on working with western devs on Nintendo franchises, is all about trust

Western studios have been put in charge of prominent Nintendo IPs over the past few years. Retro has worked on Metroid and Donkey Kong. Monster Games has also been involved with the latter series in addition to Pilotwings. And let’s not forget Next Level Games, which has worked on a pair of Mario soccer titles, Punch-Out!!, and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon.

Nintendo must have a good amount of faith in the western studios it collaborates with these days, but that level of trust wasn’t always there. ONM, curious as to why this has changed in recent years, quizzed Shigeru Miyamoto for some answers.

Miyamoto told the magazine:

I think the biggest factor is that level of trust you mentioned. We built the level of trust with those companies and we know we can rely on them. The second thing is a change in our approach. Once we would have looked at them and asked what a company can do independently and we would support them as needed.

Whereas now we’re looking at really working together. Particularly, for Luigi’s Mansion 2, Nintendo is the producer of that game. We call them second-party developers where they’re developing the game but we’re producing it and that’s where that level of trust is built.

Thanks to joclo for the tip.

Trust gets you Aliens: Colonial Marines.

When you outsource, keep them under a magnifying glass every second.

Have you ever posted anything positive?  Because I haven't seen it.

I'd prefer them keep their IP strictly internal apart from 3D Metriod. That's the ONE game that I don't think they could pull off on their own.

Prime Hunters was decent. although the Prime 1-3 were amazing.

F-Zero is another franchise i wish they'd outsource to someone, like SEGA or those Shin'en dudes. F-Zero GX was amazing and still looks good even by today's graphical standards.

Miyamoto personally oversaw Luigi's Mansion 2's development, so in that case the leash was probably rather tight.

Still, Next Level Games (which is a Canadian developer, props to my country) made a pretty darn good job on LM2. But hey, they did the remake of Punch-Out!! on Wii and it was more than decent.

NLG has potential, for sure. I could be wrong, but I think adding multiplayer to the game was their idea, and it worked out surprisingly well.

Lol, KD has a point this time though. See: Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City and Legend of Zelda: Wand of Gamelon

I'm pretty sure an internally developed Metroid game would demolish anything Retro is capable of. The last major one Nintendo did was Super Metroid, which to this day is the best in the franchise.

The thing about their more minor franchises (like Metroid, Star Fox, F-Zero) is that they're not big enough to use Nintendo's A-Teams on them.

Retro isn't outsourcing though. Retro is a Nintendo owned studio.

I describe myself as a little dose of toxic masculinity.

My post was neither positive nor negative.

It was negative, because Aliens: Colonial Marines was anything but a success.

@OP. Thanks for the news, I always love learning more about how Nintendo deals internally and with external partners.
