Forums - Gaming - Will it be okay to torrent a digital game you've purchased after the servers get shut down?

So I got to thinking: with more and more digital (and digital-only) games hitting the market, and with two of the three latest consoles featuring zero backwards compatibility, would you have any moral (not legal) objection to folks who've purchased a digital game downloading/torrenting a copy of that same game when the servers inevitably get shut down? After all, the person did "purchase" the product; should they not be able to enjoy said product, even after the digital distributor decides to save itself some money and stop letting folks redownload their purchases?

definitely not any moral objection... But, I don't have any moral objection on torrenting unnavailable games whether you've bought them or not, if the company can't make the effort to sell you a game (Virtual Console, PSN, XBN, Steam Etc)... when they do make an effort I buy FF7 3 times XD., and the only way to buy certain ones is third party which doesn't benefit them anyways at extreme prices.

I think as long as you torrent the game for the original device you bought it for and not one that took extra work. IE, you torrent the PS3 version of the PS3 port of PS2 game, not the PS4 version it. But, I know my pesronal moral rules are arbitrary, and anyone elses may be different and I ain't gonna judge.

However, legally atleast in U.S as far as I'm aware. the only legal way is to make a personal backup copy. Torrenting itself is not allowed because you are sharing it, etc. You're not allowed to buy a game for Wii and then torrent it for use in dolphin (you need a hitachi DVD-rom otherwise). You're supposed to rip it yourself. The same would likely apply for digital distribution.

Why not just create a backup copy of your digital purchases?

Folks will forget, or perhaps lose the media they used for their backups.

If there's no way to get the game, I don't have an issue with someone getting the game even by illegal means. If you own a copy of the game in some format, I also don't see an issue of getting a copy of it to play on another device(digital copies of PSX or PSP games so long as you own a physical copy.)

If the game is current and being sold still, then it's affecting the company by pirating it. I'm against that.

With what the OP is asking, I'm okay with it, but say how Games For Windows Live is shutting down and it's a game that's available for purchase elsewhere.  Even though you can't purchase it on PC, doesn't mean you can't purchase it on consoles.  If you're going to pirate it for PC, atleast purchase a console version of  the game so developers profit something since the game is still technically available.

If you bought the game, morals dictate that you are free to copy it in the future if needed.

Your morals maybe, please keep in mind morals are subjective.

Also torrenting is not making a copy, it is sharing.

That being said despite the murky legal waters I have emulators and rom copies of several older systems and games (that I own or have owned - I lost quite a collection when my college apartment flooded by a hurricane) and my morals are fine with that.

I don't recognize morals as subjective.

If you bought a game, you are allowed a copy of that game. No such restrictions apply as to how you get that copy.

I torrent stuff all the time that I don't share. How someone got to that conclusion I have no idea unless they never torrented a file before.

I'm really not certain how to respond to that.

Very Interesting, I won't try to change your opinion there as that would be almost pointless I'll just say I disagree and it sounds like someone saying 'I don't recognize that fact as a fact'.
