Forums - PC Discussion - Why Steam OS will probably be huge...

Uhm, no, I don't see it as being huge per se...do they think the main reason why people are gaming on consoles is extra price they have to pay for WinOS, and that all of a sudden people will jump to PCs just because same builds are now cheaper cause of SteamOS?

Unless they announce their own hardware that can compete in performance with next-gen for same or less money (and big publishers embrace SteamOS), I really doubt Joe Sixpack will be willing to bother with what in essence is yet another take on PC gaming.

Those 400$ budget pc builds never include the Os anyway or even a key board, mouse or even a monitor

Monitor and other stuff that costs $10 (Or that you probably already have): No

But you are mistaken if you think a ~$400 Budget build cannot compete with an X1 in performance with an OS included.  There have been plenty of ther threads about this though.  It's easy my friend...

Prediction for console Lifetime sales:

Wii:100-120 million, PS3:80-110 million, 360:70-100 million

[Prediction Made 11/5/2009]

3DS: 65m, PSV: 22m, Wii U: 18-22m, PS4: 80-120m, X1: 35-55m

I gauruntee the PS5 comes out after only 5-6 years after the launch of the PS4.

i dont see being as huge as steam i think it will be big but not steam big

1- Linux distributions have been free for 20 years now.
- There is no 500 PC build that can match XOPS4 for the next 3 years.

2- No developer will make AAA budget games exclusive for SteamOS.
- Windows won´t vanish day to night. It´s a 2bi install base.
- If SteamOS is not multasking it will fail.
- PC elitists wan´t to use mouse and keyboard.

Steam took 8 to 10 years to reach todays level (duhhh...).

Huge news! Wow!

It reminds me of when Google announced Android back in 2007. Everyone was expecting them to announce a new phone to compete with Apple, but instead they presented the OS that today controls around 80% of its market.

This is also more significant and ambitious than a single video game console. Now I'm sure they will release multiple versions of the Steam Box in the coming years, just like Google does with the Nexus.

And you know what the best part is? It's free! Which means that other manufacturers like Alienware, Asus and MSI will sell their gaming PCs at a much lower cost!

It doesn't look like SteamOS is going to be an OS like Windows or OSX but more an expansion of Steam Big Picture. I think you still need Steam on a PC to acutally run the games on your TV.

But none have had the backing and focus needed to make it "The" diffinitive version.  Valve can and will do that.

Ok well then the sky isn't blue.  Look around man there are far too many posts on VGchartz clearly showing how cheap PC gaming is for you to not be able to find it yourself.

So?  It doesn't need to be exclusive.  Get out of the "Console Mentality"

Who said windows will vanish overnight?

What does that even mean? "Not Multitasking"

LOL they will still be able to.

Yep, and it will take 8-10 years for SteamOS to be firmly cemented as THE gaming OS.  That doesn't mean it won't be just as good as Windows in 3 years...

You are:

"It will be available soon as a free stand-alone operating system for living room machines."

"In SteamOS, we have achieved significant performance increases in graphics processing"

Ohh okay that makes more sense. It sounds interesting, I think it's too early to tell if it's going to be a sucess or a flop but it has a lot of potential.

You're assuming PC gamers will jump ship to this linux / steam os forgetting all the other stuff they use their PC for. Additionally, steam will always still support windows because its marketshare forces them to.

This will do nothing for devs as they will still need to design for windows and now this new steam os. In fact, you can argue it makes it harder. There is a reason linux gets very few games. This new steam os will be even less.

This could be less of an issue if I'm misunderstanding this and this steam os is designed to be a layer on windows vs replace windows.
