Forums - Microsoft - Microsoft announces Surface Pro 2 with updated kickstand and Haswell processor

Microsoft has unveiled the Surface Pro 2, a new version of its flagship 10.6-inch Windows tablet. Little has been changed externally on the updated device, but Microsoft says that its display now has 46 percent greater color accuracy and that its speakers are powered by Dolby. Internally, things are a lot different: Microsoft says that it's now faster than 95 percent of laptops, and that its graphics performance has increased by 50 percent. It includes a Haswell processor and a 75 percent improvement in battery life. "We improved the performance on this product by 20 percent, if you thought it was fast before it is lightning fast now," says Panos Panay, Microsoft's VP of Surface.

The Surface Pro 2 is also trying to adjust one of the biggest complaints many had with the original tablet: that its built-in kickstand was difficult to use when propped on your lap. The kickstand now has a second position that can prop the tablet up at a 55 degree angle, in addition to the 22 degree angle present on its predecessor.

Microsoft is also unveiling two new accessories for its Surface tablets. The Surface Pro line is getting a docking station that will transform the tablets into something closer to a traditional PC by providing USB ports for connecting a mouse and keyboard to and a Mini DisplayPort for adding an external monitor. There’s also a new Touch Cover keyboard called the Power Cover, which includes a built-in battery for extending the tablet’s daily longevity.

Where do they get these random processor names from?!  I was interested in the Surface Pro before but never bought one.  Still happy with my Nexus and my laptop.  If the price is right, I may make a switch this holiday season.  The complaints are nothing I really think will bother me.

I take it that these will still cost ~$1000 w/keyboard?

Hopefully the older models drop significantly.

Oh, well. At least they aren't making a second RT.

The Power Cover is nice, I'm sure Asus is flattered that MSoft takes ideas from their Transformer.

“It appeared that there had even been demonstrations to thank Big Brother for raising the chocolate ration to twenty grams a week. And only yesterday, he reflected, it had been announced that the ration was to be reduced to twenty grams a week. Was it possible that they could swallow that, after only twenty-four hours? Yes, they swallowed it.”

Learned what? The form factor is very good. I was interested in it with the first version, but thought it'd be better to wait for the second or third version, as these kind of things usually don't get it right on their first attempt.

In any case, what haven't they learned?

The pricing really threw me off for the 8GB pro. Might just stick with getting an ultrabook. Will wait until christmas.
