They never claimed those products were innovative. As they've stated... they are just lower price points to lower the barrier of entry for people on the fence. It's a good thing. Higher install bases = more publisher support = more games.

The Screamapillar is easily identified by its constant screaming—it even screams in its sleep. The Screamapillar is the favorite food of everything, is sexually attracted to fire, and needs constant reassurance or it will die.

Well once the PS4 releases, remote play on Vita is going to allow the Vita to play console games without the TV as well. Technically the Vita and PSP already can play console games without the TV, just not very many.
