Check out Valve games. Half Life's, Portal 2, TF2, Left4Dead's. Not sure what kind of games you like. Better to buy games on big sales so just grab one for now.

Edit: No shooters. Disregard everything.

I think that would be totally fine.

Hey I liked Metroid Prime.

Xbox One: What are you doing Dave?

I don't think PC has any must haves anymore thanks to MS bringing the PC devs over to the console realm. Blizzard is even looking like they want in on the console action now.

You're kidding right? You might have skipped the whole kickstarter revolution. :)
The PC is getting the first publicly funded AAA game ever in the form of Star Citizen, you can't forget the kickstarter funded Planetary Annihilation, Torment, Project Eternity, Wasteland 2, Elite: Dangerous either, just amongst a few,

Although true Blizzard is bringing over Diablo 3 to consoles, StarCraft and WarCraft will probably remain PC centric as they don't lend themselves too well to console controllers. (If you ever played StarCraft on the Ninentdo 64, you will understand completely.)
Besides, it's not like Blizzard hasn't developed on consoles before, they brought out games on the SNES and N64, it's just the PC that made them successfull, like so many other developers.
And if Diablo 3 on consoles doesn't match the PC's 15+ million copies sold, then, well, companies go where the money is.

On top of that League of Legends is currently the worlds most played game (PC only) and the worlds most costliest game ever developed is StarWars: The Old Republic (PC Only).

You can't forget all the Valve games either which are *always* top notch, then include Civilization, The Settlers, Heroes of Might and magic, Titan Quest, X3 series, Company of Heroes, Arma 3, DayZ, Dota 2, Homeworld 3 (Aka. Homeworld: Shipbreakers), Rome 2 and the Total War series, Sins of a Solar Empire and  Red Orchestra just from what I can name off the top of my head.
The PC isn't exactly "barren" for games, heck you have several decades large library of exclusives to even choose from. :)

Granted "must have" games is pretty much down to personal taste, for example I see no "must have" games on any of the consoles, other than Halo and Fable, but that's my personal gaming taste, others will surely differ.

Sorry to disappoint you but I haven't heard of any of those AAA games. Most AAA titles have the budget to match and not stay behind the curtain. I am just saying the companies that have crafted the PC realm to what it is today whom still command the lionshare of the history and respect have also gone multiplat tot he console realm. I have Steam, but I haven't really seen very much that is a must have, sorry. I'll look some of those games up later. Mind you, I used to be a PC gamer (75% of the time) when i was much younger until the first Xbox came out. All of my friends had Xboxes so it forced me to shift over. I eventually dropped the XBox, but because a lot of games that were on PC were there and Halo was no longer coming to the Mac it was easy to switch over. In my household I had both a Mac and a custom built PC too.

@Pemalite: Just ignore him. He just called Civilization - the arguably most famous TBS game ever created - a "major RTS game" in his edited post. He doesn't know better...

AudioSurf is something everyone should have, if they have music on their PC. Other than Scrabble and Chess, it's the only gave I go back to on a consistent basis.

Torchlight II is a lot of fun if you like dungeon crawling. Diablo without all the fluff.

Deponia and Machinarium if you like point and click puzzle games. Both have excellent and unique vibes.

It's a shame about the no shooter thing, as Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas are incredible, especially with the amazing mod support they have. They're more open-world RPG than shooter, of course, but you still have to kill stuff.

A lot of games are must-have on the PC simply by virtue of being the best version.

You couldn't pay me to to play a Bethesda or Dragon Age game on a console instead of PC.

You haven't heard of them, because you don't particularly care for them, hence the issue, 10's of Millions of PC gamers would completely utterly disagree with you.

Besides, not all the games I listed are AAA games, nor did I even state it as such, old Developers moved to the console, the PC got all new ones and even invented a couple of new Genre's like the "building" genre showcased in Minecraft. :)

Besides, PC games don't need budgets as big as consoles, the platform is cheaper to develop on and game sales have larger profit margins.

But please, don't make generalised statements about a particular platform if you have no idea about it.

Europa Universalis 4 is an amazing RTS game. Limbo is a great, cheap, 2d platformer.

How can you miss Total War when its fricken advertised like hell in the past few weeks/months o.O

http://www.totalwar.com/en_US/rome2/

I get a steam popup of this game every so few hours.

And DOTA2? You never heard of that..ok now you are lying >.>.

How can you have Steam and NOT know these games lol.

/facepalm

I know what DOTA is, but I've never seen it heavily advertised, you know, like on TV? I go to school with videogame developers, of course I know what it is. They played it like the week it came out and then stopped.
