Certainly more than what you seem to think. You said "a lot less than half that" which should mean something like 2m. 

My number would be around 4m (3.5-4.5m) sold and not much more than that shipped this year.

Just wait till the end of the year before going into the predictions and who is right and who is wrong. You seem to be trying to get a rise out of people with posting these and suggesting Ethomaz and Pezus are already wrong. I myself predict 4M by end of year. What is yours?

5.5 million shipped this year?

Semms like Sony really increased the forecast to PS4.

Edit - Fixed numbers due the prodcution reach 1 million in September.

And what I said is wrong? Sony said they plan to reach 1 million per month in September so I did predicted the Sony shipment for PS4 in 2013.

Now some info for you...

+ The preorder is bigger than 1 million
+ Every company reserve a number of units to stores... so if before the launch there are 1 millon real preorders then Sony shipped close to 2 million (1 million to meet the day one preorders and 1 million to say one at stores)
+ The Production needs at least 10 days to reach the stores (to get shipped status)... so the Production in late December will reach the stores only in January.

Now with the recent news 5.5 million produced in 2013 seems a bit low... I'm going to close 7 million if they can increase the production over 1 million after September.

Sony contract for manufacture the PS4 with Foxconn Electronics... the components parts are being made by Lite-On IT, Lite-On Technology, Foxlink, Asia Optical, Kinko Optical, Newmax, Foxconn Technology, Coxon, Nishoku, Elite Advanced Laser, Tong Hsing Electronic Industries, Adda, Delta Electronics, Chicony Electronics and Neng Tyi.

That's what the latest rumors says.

Shipment between 5.0-6.0 million... when Sony changed from production numbers to shipments numbers for PS2 they showed a difference of ~1.5million... so there were ~1.5 million manufactured but not shipped yet for PS2.

The 1m is for day one people. They are still taking preorders, just they can no longer guarantee you get it on the day of release unless you are one of the first 1m people.
