Forums - Gaming - What are the PS4's Big Games in Japan?

Something I've heard around these parts is that the PS4 is going to crush the competition worldwide this holiday season. Now, I understand this sentiment, even if I don't agree with it, for most of the world.

But what about Japan?

From where I stand, I do not see how the PS4 would do well in Japan this Holiday Season, even compared to the floundering Wii U and declining PS3.

Let's take a look at the competition, the PS3 and Wii U, from September through December 2013.

PS3 Games:

*GTA5 (4 sold over 400,000 in Japan for the PS3 despite the system's poor sales at the time)

*Tales of Symphonia HD (Tales is a big seller in Japan, with Xilia being the #10 PS3 game of all time there)

*Gran Turismo 6 (The direct sequel of the #7 PS3 game of all time in Japan)

*Call of Duty: Ghosts (These games typically sell 450,000 to 500,000 in Japan nowadays on the PS3 alone)

*Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy 13 (Will easily pass half a million sales in 2013 alone unless reviews are terrible)

Wii U Games

*Wind Waker HD (Original sold nearly a million copies in Japan, and Ocarina 3D sold over half a million, so a quarter million sales in 2013 would be easy)

*Wii Fit U (Frankly, this could lose half the sales of its predecessor and still be a big system seller)

*Wii Party U (Likewise, half the sales of the Wii predecessor would leave this a million seller in Japan alone!)

*Super Mario 3D World (3D Land already has nearly 2 million sales in Japan, Galaxy duo each had about a million)

*Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (Returns sold over a million, a huge amount for a technically Western game)

As you can see, both the PS3 and the Wii U, platforms that are already out, have some big games coming up in Japan this year. Even if they don't all pan out (I'm looking at you multiplatform games on the Wii U!), the PS4 would certainly not run unopposed this holiday, especially due to its lack of backwards compatibility.

So, what does the PS4 bring to the table for Japanese audiences? Multiplatform games also on the PS3 and Wii U (Call of Duty, Assassin's Creed, etc.), games that Japan can't give a flying **** about (Killzone), and Knack. And a Minecraft port.

I'm just not feeling it guys.

What do you think. Does the PS4's holiday lineup look alright for Japan? Or will it be overshadowed by its predecessor and its derided competitor?

If I had internet (not counting my phone of course) right now, I'd throw a facepalm meme at you. The release date for Japan won't be announced until September 9th, meaning it will be one of the last major markets to receive the console. Also, Japan's "holiday" season isn't until next year, so I'm sure Sony will announce titles aimed at that market at the Tokyo Gameshow.

Edit: No offense, but you really didn't think this through at all....

The PS4 will be overshadowed in Japan by the PS3 and I think Sony is alright with that. The thing is, people on these forums are looking at the PS4 as a PS3 replacement but Sony is looking at it as another model in their line-up. The PS4 will gather steam slowly in Japan while the PS3 continues to sell software.

This does open the door for the Wii U, though. Let's see what they can do with the chance. However, I'd be surprised if the "Wii" series even gets close to half its total on the Wii.

Their are none. TGS might reveal a few smaller projects. Dark Souls 2 on PS4 maybe. Some Tales remake maybe.

Why do you feel that he hasn't thought it out?

It's not just about holiday systems, it's about launch systems.  They seem to have a very western focused lineup with few games with any chance of success in Japan.  Games announced at TGS are unlikely to be released this year, so the question is what do they have for this year for Japan.

They've already announced which regions will be receiving the PS4 on the 15th and the 29th of November. Do you really think they'll release it in Japan in December? We don't know what they have in mind for Japan's launch, but it certainly won't be the games they're launching this year. Japan probably won't see the console until February or even March, which would be a month ahead of Golden Week.

Another question then: If Sony is giving Nintendo two "free" holiday seasons, does that mean that they no longer care about Japan very much?

None really, Final Fantasy 15, MGS, Kingdom Hearts are all big games for Japan, but they are still a ways away.

Knack is made in Japan so that might help it out a little.

Maybe move The Last Guardian to the Ps4. (doubt it)

Most Japanese devs are still making games on the Ps3 atm so its hard to tell....Guess TGS will reveal some.

I think Sony feels they have a good enough presence in Japan right now with Vita and PS3. The PS4 probably won't release there until next year sometime.

Love the product, not the company. They love your money, not you.

They never announced their japan launch line up wait TGS.

PS4 - over 100 millions let's say 120m
Xbox One - 70m
Wii U - 25m

Vita - 15m if it will not get Final Fantasy Kingdoms Heart and Monster Hunter 20m otherwise
3DS - 80m

Wii Fit U and Wii Party U won't come even close to the originals in sales. Those game were huge successes because the large casual audience of the Wii. The WiiU doesn't have that audience.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!
