Forums - General - Sony and other Japanese companies using ‘banishment rooms’ to push employees to resign

Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode where George is trying to get fired and his boss is trying to make him quit lol.

Around the Network

oh wait... I thought Microsoft was the only one doing some bad and evil stuff!

Reading on the "internet forums" Sony is a nice company, not doing anything for money but for the wellness of the gamers out there? I'm not buying this, my good old Sony would not do anything like that.

Didn't Nintendo kinda do this with Gunpei Yokoi in 1995/1996 after his failure with the Virtual Boy?

HE even made the Game Boy Pocket as an apology before he quit.

i've heard that Yamauchi was an asshole. Iwata seems a bit nicer though XD

Maybe I am missing something, but why don't they just fire the employees? Surely that has to be better than giving them pay for doing nothing

"Basically, banishment rooms are departments where companies transfer surplus employees and give them menial or useless tasks or even nothing to do until they become depressed or disheartened enough to quit on their own, thus not getting full benefits, unlike if they were actually let go"  Its in the op. It must be cheaper to pay them to do nothing, but not have to worry about benifits when they quit.

Sounds like this article made your day

Around the Network

Of course, it exists everywhere, in multiple forms.

I won't say it's bad, cause I saw a case where my mother had to actually go all the way trough the hierarchy so one of his employee would not get any salary before he took a shower. Paying fortunes to fire employees that don't do anything to the point you can't even approach them or send them a client is just horrible.

Sounds like a challenge. I'd hold off quitting as long as I can just to piss off the executives.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

I don't know if this is exactly true or not, and it wouldn't surprise if it is, as companies all over the world have similar methods, but that article has nothing in the way of a source. No quotes from experts or former employees and nothing that reinforce or confirm the accusations. I have no way of knowing if there is much to this beyond just the opinion of the writer.

I, too, am on reddit :P

While I am coming at it from a different culture, this sounds absolutely terrible. Seems like it might break a few people or cause them to consider suicide, or worse.

In California, an 'At Will' state, they can fire you, at any moment, for any reason (other than the protected ones: Race, Colour, Religion, Creed, National Origin, Sexual Orientation, etc.) But if you show up in a blue tie, and boss doesn't like blue ties, they can fire you for that.

Depending on your the nature job, they might not have to give you 2 week pay either. But that depends on the situation.

Really not sure I see any point of Consol over PC's since Kinect, Wii and other alternative ways to play have been abandoned.
