Forums - Gaming - AMD: PS4 performance advantage over XB1 bigger than many expect thanks to hUMA

The AMD statement is true... PS4 has hUMA and Xbone not... AMD now is just saying they will never comments about the APUs again due MS got mad.

I mean, look at their response:

first you have this :AMD have now moved to retract those comments, releasing the following statement.

this is what was said by AMD:

"During a recent Gamescom 2013 interview

A) AMD just stated there was indeed in fact an interview.

B) an AMD spokesperson made inaccurate statements regarding the details of our semi-custom APU architectures.

notice that, it said "DETAILS" Marc Diana was inaccurate about regarding the "Details" of our semi-custom APU architectures, That does not say that precludes the PS4 from Having Huma, or the xboxone from haveing Huma also.

C) "AMD will not comment on the Microsoft Xbox One and Sony PS4 memory architectures and will not speak for Microsoft, Sony or other AMD customers."

So the fact that An AMD's Senior Product Marketing Manager Marc Diana said that the PS4 had shipped with a sense of Huma [Heterogeneous Uniform Memory Access] from AMD.

Stated this did infact speak, did AMD now say he was not telling the truth? No all they said was he was not to speak for anyother company and , he was wrong on details, what those details are ? AMD is not saying.

AMD action over that shows that MS gets mad about the comments that cleary shows they are true.

If both APU are the same I have absolute certain AMD will say that Xbone have hUMA too but not they said they will never talk about them again.

But that's nothing new... all the leaks specs shows PS4 GPU more close to a future AMD GCN 2.0 while the Xbone APU is a AMD GCN 1.1 version.

This Reedit dev was the same that asked what is "hUMA"?

or that the xboxone developer on regedit stated:

XboxOneDevConfirmed XB1 Dev  39 points 9 hours ago

" He also noted that he couldn’t find a source where AMD’s senior product marketing manager Marc Diana stated that the PS4 would have hUMA and the Xbox One wouldn’t."

it was out of an interview @ Gamescom! and fudzilla

The three "major modifications" Sony did to the architecture to support this vision are as follows, in Cerny's words:

"First, we added another bus to the GPU that allows it to read directly from system memory or write directly to system memory, bypassing its own L1 and L2 caches. As a result, if the data that's being passed back and forth between CPU and GPU is small, you don't have issues with synchronization between them anymore. And by small, I just mean small in next-gen terms. We can pass almost 20 gigabytes a second down that bus. That's not very small in today’s terms -- it’s larger than the PCIe on most PCs!

"Next, to support the case where you want to use the GPU L2 cache simultaneously for both graphics processing and asynchronous compute, we have added a bit in the tags of the cache lines, we call it the 'volatile' bit. You can then selectively mark all accesses by compute as 'volatile,' and when it's time for compute to read from system memory, it can invalidate, selectively, the lines it uses in the L2. When it comes time to write back the results, it can write back selectively the lines that it uses. This innovation allows compute to use the GPU L2 cache and perform the required operations without significantly impacting the graphics operations going on at the same time -- in other words, it radically reduces the overhead of running compute and graphics together on the GPU."

Thirdly, said Cerny, "The original AMD GCN architecture allowed for one source of graphics commands, and two sources of compute commands. For PS4, we’ve worked with AMD to increase the limit to 64 sources of compute commands -- the idea is if you have some asynchronous compute you want to perform, you put commands in one of these 64 queues, and then there are multiple levels of arbitration in the hardware to determine what runs, how it runs, and when it runs, alongside the graphics that's in the system."

Not to mention, AMD just retracted their statements for being inaccurate.

But the Sony fanboys will just say MS paid them since they say that to anything.

I called it! What do I win?

Called what?

Your posts are all over the place and very confusing...

Either that or maybe you didn't bother to read everything to understand the context. Yeah, I think that might be it.

I'll save you some time though.

When some one posted AMD's "retraction" I commented that people were going to run with that as proof that they were right

You mean just like how those Amazon polls were retracted prematurely, after M$ announced their special partnership with Amazon. But I guess those were faked too.

You're an idiot if you can't figure out why AMD retracted their statements. BOTH consoles use AMD hardware. That statement was a pretty big declaration, something that AMD couldn't have made a mistake on. They realised they may have pissed off one of their biggest partners, so they have to cover their ass somehow. But, if that's what makes Xbots sleep better at night, then to each his own I guess..

Oh the retraction was just one piece of the pie. The fact that there is tons of other evidence supporting that Xbox One had the same/similar technology is overwhelming.

I find it hilarious that you kept calling people out for "listening to the talking heads" or whatnot, yet you jump on ONE tiny, poorly translated statement by someone from AMD.

What exactly do YOU have to try and prove you are right (that PS4 has this unified memory tech and Xbox One doesn't)?

and why again did microsoft go with amd? but for those that pretty much are ignoring what the o.p. said i will try to explain it. microsoft didnt need to go with huma to do tiled resources because it was made for tiled resources. it all has direct x11.2 to get it done.

And don't forget HyperVisor for other memory swapping. But be careful, some people here just want to stop at the PS4's GPU and not listen to some issues they are having with it.  They just want to swam and glee over each other feeling some artificial superiority; which is clearly empty as they freak out when anything challenges their limited understanding.  They do not understand nor want to know about optimization.  Or the differences between DirectX and OpenGL or any of that sciency stuff.

It's like when they push, push, a movie to make a big splash opening weekend - often because they know it is not any good and will lose audience fast.

But we shall see in a few months.  Then we can have ice cream and a good laugh.
