And as the Reverse of this question and reference to what qualities I appreciate the most.

Yuna: appears to be meek from her outward appearance but is probably the best protaganist in the entire series due to the way she evolves as a character thru the plot.

Vivi: is one of the most endearing figures in the series. Something about his design and personality shines bright. He is the best part about FFIX.

Cloud: You saw this coming, I'm sure. His narcissistic personality in the outset of the game was just a cover to hide his deep sense of self loathing as well as insecurity (also Mako poisoning). I think Cloud is a very good rendition of the avg person. He is proof that our only true hindrance life is our belief that we "Can't" or that we just are not good enough. How the biggest failure of the Shinra Militia took down their most exalted warrior.....its poetry really.

Cloud doesn't have a personality. He's a fraud. He's pretending to be Zack. He assumes his identity. He's wearng his clothes, carrying his sword, goes after his girlfriend and his biggest "memory" is Zack's visit to is in Nibelheim with Sephiroth. It's part of the reason I dislike FFVII so much. He's a phony for a bulk to game. Tifa knows this. Yet she doesn't inform Barrett. It's not like they were close as kids. She barely knew he existed. It makes no damned sense. If wasn't for Emil Castagnier, he'd probably still be my least favorite protaginist in any JRPG I played.

I vote Vaan coz I wanted Ashe to be the main protagonist of FFXII.

This is of course subjective, and I respect your opinion, but as far as I know, is not like Tifa, Rinoa, Aeris, Garnet or Yuna were manipulated and abused by one of the most evil characters in the FF universe. Yuna got kidnapped but she didn't go through what Terra did.

I doubt Kefka was the one "raising" Terra, or really having much to do with her until the Magitek experiments were nearly complete. Even if he was, he didn't go batshit loony until after he was enfused with Magitek, by which time Terra was no longer a child (I think: the timeline's rather fuzzy).

Don't tell me you didnt want to bitch slap Snow more than any other character in the FF universe.

Snow was annoying but Snow isn't a legit protagonist, if we are just naming characters, I'd throw out Cait Sith, Gau, Gogo, Irvine, Wakka, etc.

The fact that Squall isn't winning this poll is one of the many reasons there is something wrong this generation of gamers... and the reason Twilight made stupid amount of money.

Nah Squall was awesome, those characters before ff10 were all great because there was no voice acting, even if they said some cliche lines in your head you could make them sound way less corny.

Excluding the Gunblade how exactly was Squall awesome? Because I remember him whining and acting like jerk more for about half of the game while people gravitated toward his anti social self for no reason.

Granted, I felt him and Rinoa deserved one another because I found her the perfect punishment for such a emo pretty boy so obviously trying to capture the magic Square soft found with Cloud. Vaan, I barely consider a main character but even he had more redeeming characteristics in regards to personality and game play then I found with Squall.Anyone

Anyone catch the irony in this Noirguy's posts? Based on his emo sounding-whining and jerkish posts towards the gamer generation, he's a living breathing version of the caricature he has drawn up for Squall. Only, without the gunblade =P

Actually, I was similar to Squall growing up, which is why I after I had gotten over that stuff I and saw it in the protagonist I don't get how people can't look at him as one of the worst leads, that sort of behavior even with him turning it around is such a waste of time. Especially given it has been handled better with previous characters like Cloud and Kain in the Final Fantasy series alone.

Although how you view my old man rant and knocking the story for FFVIII as being some how similar to Squall makes me suspect there is probably an age/taste gap thing here. Meh, none of the main protagonists have ever been my favorite characters in Final Fantasy games but obviously one person's treasure is another person's trash. Just surprised so many actually consider Squall NOT the later.

The only correct answer is Squall, for reasons I'm sure were cited in this thread already.

Terra is an extremely weak protagonist, I find her incredibly dull. Although for the second half of the game, Celes pretty much becomes the protagonist, and she's A FAR better character, while Terra loses much of her importance.

Vaan is insignificant, but he's not a bad character per say. The decision to put him as the leading man was wrong. He does nothing to the story AT ALL, the de facto protagonist is Ashe (or Basch). But really, Vaan doesn't deserve all this hate.

Cloud and Lightning are only hated because their games are over-hated. There, I said it.

He wasn't even the most annoying character in the game. I'd slap the hell out of Hope and Vanille before I even got around to Snow.

I hated Hope but eventually he ended up being the character with the most character development and I ended up liking more than i did once. By the end of the game he was multiple times more powerful than he was in the beginning.

Ugh I forgot all about Hope.  I guess I wiped that painful memory completely out of necessity.  Thank you for bringing it back.

Good governor that game sucked coming and going.

Weird thing is that all what you jsut said is to me what makes him an interesting character. He's no action hero protagonist, he's f*ed up. The experiments done to him, infusing him with both Mako and Jenova cells messed him up, making him lose his true memories and replace them with what he saw Zack do during their time together. He truely believes that is what happens for the first major part of the game.

Hmm, pie.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. Cloud just didn't sense as character for me and Tifa hiding his secret just ruined an already weak plot.

Side note: There is absolutely no reason for Cloud to assume Zack's identity. Zack failed to stop Sephiroth and despite being a "lowly" Shinra guard. Cloud did. He's the one "killed" Sephiroth. Despite my disdain for FFVII and Cloud. One of the coolest moments in Final Fantasy was "Lowly Shinra Guard" Cloud, tossing "The World's Greatest Soldier" Sephiroth into the Lifestream after being run though.
