Forums - Movies & TV - United States or Japan: Who's animation is better?

Who's Cartoons are better?

America 107 21.84%

Japan 368 75.10%

Other 13 2.65%

Total:488

★ JAPAN ★

No contest, should only judge if you watch plenty of both. US has some good ones, Ex: Avatar while japan lives for manga(which ends up being Anime)

One Piece FTW, but others are just as great (Hitman Reborn/Naruto/Deathnote/Bleach/DBZ/Fairy Tail)

Best anime of all time, Dragonball Z, was made in Japan.

What the heck! Japan!!

No contest ... The land of the rising sun.

Japan. Atleast they still got one thing going for them.

I bet I can name twice as many great American Cartoons than you can name Japan ones.

Not including David the Gnome.

All I really have to do is bring up an anime site to see a good 100 new animes that have been released in the past "year."  I no longer watch anime or much tv in general, so I wouldn't know whether they're good or not, but from friends I have that still watch anime, I'm constantly hearing there are good series that I should watch.

There's so few good cartoons today that Japan probably has more good hentai than America has good cartoons.

I think Japan does a better job in diversity of animation. I just do not see many American animation that go for older audiences. Due to varying cultures animation has this "for children" stigma in the states. I am not saying that certain animation has not had that great for all ages feel, but I would be stunned to see a rated R or even PG-13 animated film form an American studio anytime soon.

Simpsons, Family Guy, King of the Hill, Archer, American Dad, Stripperella, Auqa Teen Hunger Force, Space Ghost Coast to Coast are cartoon shows targeted at adults. Im sure im missing alot.

When the herd loses its way, the shepard must kill the bull that leads them astray.

mostly all the Cartoon are made in Korea or Japan these days .... sooooo Asia Win.

In terms of animation (strictly visual) I think the US/West has the edge. In Japan, all the animation is pretty homogenized. Same character style, same art style, color palette, etc. US has a pretty wide range of art styles which is really good.

In terms of story though, Japan wins out. Most US cartoons fall into a few categories. You have inanely random shows, kids action shows, kids comedy shows, and Simpsons inspired sitcoms. With Japan, you animation can be a medium for action, romance, comedy, drama, etc. Stuff like Serial Experiments, Death Note, Haibane Renmei, and Paranoia Agent show that they take animation a bit more seriously. Wish their art styles were as varied as the stories.

Anime is perhaps the most overrated form of media in popular culture today.

This post pretty much accentuates my problem with this thread.  The OP doesn't really clarify at all by what means are we judging these things.

edit: changed the wording a little bit so it's clear who I'm directing this to.
