Forums - Gaming - Japanese smartphone game market $2.7 Billion in 2012 | dedicated gaming software $2.8 Billion | Total Mobile > dedicated gaming

Not surprising, it was going to happen sooner or later, i wouldn't be surprised if the PS4 and 3DS were the only viable systems in japan within the next few years

Well I guess that explains Square-Enix and Capcom's fascination with cell phone gaming.

The 3DS to Japan is more like what the 360/PS3 are to the West. It's the "standard" core gaming console in Japan, it just so happens in Japan the home console concept is basically gone. The 3DS fills that void.

This is impressive?

3DS can't even fill in the handheld void left from the DS and PSP.. it's pretty sad:

Face the future.. Gamecenter ID: nikkom_nl (oh no he didn't!!)

This is the very reason why MS and Sony need to get their act together and Think about how they can get more gamers into the more traditional video game Community. This means creating new ways of getting involved with your console, exploring the F2P-model and so forth.

Separate markets. The same goes for console and hand held comparisons. The fact is, a VAST majority of smart phone game "revenue" is going to casuals. It's going to the candy crush types etc. Hard core gamers, almost all of them game on either consoles, PCs or dedicated hand held devices.

I hate to inform all the doomsters but, hard core gamers will NEVER die off. The market can only shrink so much but at the end of the day, there are millions of us who will always keep the industry going.

comparing numbers from  2006-2007 is really quite pointless, that is the two most succesful years for any console in japanese history
