Forums - Nintendo - Is the 3DS going to steal the spotlight from the Xbone and PS4 this Christmas?

I don't know why there would be any hype for Xbone or PS4 this Christmas. What exclusive launch titles do they have that would convince me otherwise?

The games everyone is going to be playing this Christmas are GTA, Pokémon, and Call of Duty (mostly on current gen and PC).

Forza 5? Deadrising 3? Killzone: Shadowfall? Drive Club? Project Spark?

Just because these games don't interest you don't make them bad by any means, I'll be playing Killzone SF and Project Spark later on this year along with GTA.

Someone with a Pokemon avatar downplaying MS and Sony, how rare.

In Japan, easily. Are the new console even launching in Japan this year?
In America, tough to say. The 3DS has very strong lineup but the PS4 and Xbone have a lot of hype behind them. Should be a very interesting holiday.

Sigs are dumb. And so are you!

In terms of sales, absolutely! Worldwide release of Pokemon in October has already guaranteed that. In terms of "hype" and sheer "talk," probably not. New consoles are always a big deal, so PS4 and Xbone will be getting a lot of attention regardless of how they actually perform and what games they have available at launch.

Interestingly enough, I think Wii U COULD potentially steal the spotlight and grab some headlines...but only if those headlines are negative. If Wii U successfully regains some momentum with the solid slate of games it has just begun to receive, that will be great...but probably won't draw much attention. However, if Wii U is STILL selling weakly even after the 1-2-3-4 punch of Zelda, Donkey Kong, 3D Mario, and Wii Fit (plus the other more "niche," supporting titles) then I would expect quite a LOT of spotlight on what would likely be officially considered Nintendo's first true home console flop. I would expect a lot of "DOOM and GLOOM" news reports and articles, even though Mario Kart, Smash Bros., and a price cut could STILL save the Wii U next year.

Upcoming Games To Get

Definite: Kirby Star Allies (Switch), Mario Tennis Aces (Switch), Fire Emblem (Switch), Yoshi (Switch), Pokemon (Switch), Kingdom Hearts 3 (PS4), Monster Hunter World (PS4)

Considering: Fe (Switch), Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze (Switch), The World Ends With You (Switch), Ys VIII (Switch), Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition (PS4), Kingdom Hearts 2.8 Remix (PS4), The Last Guardian (PS4), Shadow of the Colossus HD (PS4), Anthem (PS4), Shenmue 3 (PS4), WiLD (PS4)

Steal, no. It'll share the spotlight with PS4/X1 in the West; Japan may be a different story, though I still expect PS4 to do quite well there.

Also keep in mind that you're talking about two audiences, a handheld audience and a home console audience, and while there is overlap between the two they are not the exact same group. There will be those like me who don't care much at all about how well the 3DS/Vita do, and others who don't care about the new home consoles.

Yeah, I agree with this.  There is definitely overlap (the part I hate when people don't acknowledge), but they are indeed going to be separate in terms of the attention.

If we want to talk about how the sales will be itself, I think 3DS will top the charts this Christmas.

Downplaying MS and Sony by saying that GTA and Call of Duty are going to be two of the three most-played games this Christmas. Right.

Killzone is alright but it's an FPS that is going to be overshadowed by two other FPS, one of which will be playable on every conceivable platform, and another that will be playable on every conceivable platform minus the Wii U.

Drive Club is alright but it's a driving sim that will be overshadowed by GT6, Forza 5, and Need For Speed.

Project Spark? Dead Rising? Really? Forza is the only game you named that I could see being legitimately hyped, and it still has competition this year from current-gen in the form of GT and NFS.

Like I said. The hardware will be hyped but the GAMES everyone are going to be playing, talking about, and thus hyping will NOT be PS4/Xbone exclusives.

The Pokémon avatar was a joke. Clearly I need to change it because this is the second time I've been told that my opinion is rendered irrelevant by my avatar of all things.

I can see why you say that and why a lot of people think that...as in comparison's terms to the competitors and Nintendo's past consoles it certainly wasn't a success. However, Gamecube was profitable for Nintendo from day one, so Nintendo made money on every single Gamecube sold (20 Million+). Even moreso when you add the games. At the moment, Nintendo is LOSING money on each Wii U sold, so if its sales don't turn around by the end of the year and help some of the games start selling, most people will be ready to call it an absolute flop. Though again, I STILL say even if that happens, Mario Kart, Smash Bros., and a price cut could still give the Wii U one last chance.

My main point though was the double-standard...that if Nintendo starts doing decent or even doing well with Wii U, you won't hear a whole lot about it. But if it continues to struggle, the DOOM and GLOOM that Wii U has endured so far will pale in comparison to what's ahead.

Dead Rising is a good franchise with nice sales, so is Killzone, which has very nice pre-orders at the moment and considering that it plays different from CoD and BF4 I severely doubt it'll be forgotten about. Project Spark looks amazing and has recieved nothing but positive press since it was unveiled, has the potential to be big. We don't even know how the final version of Drive Club will look, nor do we even know how it plays.

Saying no one will play Xbone or PS4 exclusives cause GTA, Pokemon, and CoD are releasing is highly illogical when the pre-order numbers show otherwise, and histoy. Launch titles have always sold very well, so you're making a baseless assumption.

I don't think so.
